Rachel Maddow Says Right-Wing Wrong on Fort Hood Attack
"Horror at Fort Hood Inspires Horribly Predictable Islamophobia"
by John Nichols ,The Nation.com,11/05/2009
Last Thursday's shooting spree at the Fort Hood army base in Texas -- which left 13 people dead and 29 wounded -- was of course the "horrific outburst of violence" that President Obama bemoaned and condemned.
But, because the soldier who was quickly identified as the gunman had a name that led to the presumption that he was Muslim, the incident inspired an all-too-predictable explosion of Islamophobia. ..
Several new reports suggested that the major saw a deployment to the warzone as his "worst nightmare" and recounted how he had treated victims of combat-related stress and was upset about the ongoing U.S. occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan...
...Paul Sullivan, executive director of the group Veterans for Common Sense, suggested shortly after the incident that it might well be the latest in a series of stress-related homicides and suicides involving soldiers who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan or are being dispatched to those occupied lands.
No matter where the speculation went Thursday afternoon, the bottom line was clear: No one knew whether stress, fear, anger over mistreatment, mental illness or a warped understanding of his religion might have motivated Major Hasan.
The point here is not to defend the soldier or his alleged actions -- the evidence at hand suggests that he was, at the least, a deeply troubled man whose statements and actions should have raised concerns among his superiors long before Thursday's incident. By Friday, there were news reports that he had shouted "Allahu Akbar" ("God is great") before opening fire. There was clearly something wrong with this imperfect follower of Islam. But that does not mean that there is something wrong with Islam.
...Enlightened Americans -- at least those who trace their patriotism to Thomas Jefferson, a man fascinated by and respectful of Islam and whose library contained copies of the Koran -- should be unsettled by the initial rush to judgment regarding not just this one Muslim but all Muslims.
It should be understood that to assume a follower of Islam who engages in violence is a jihadist is every bit as absurd as to assume that a follower of Christianity who attacks others is a crusader. The calculus makes no sense, and it is rooted in a bigotry that everyone from George W. Bush to Pope Benedict XVI has condemned.
But that did not stop right-wing web sites from responding to the release of the suspect's name -- and no other details -- with incendiary speculation about a "Jihad at Fort Hood?" and a "Terrorist Incident in Texas."

U.S. Muslim Group Urges Calm, Unity After Fort Hood Shootings
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/5/09) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) tonight reiterated the Muslim communities condemnation of todays deadly shootings at Fort Hood in Texas and urged the nation to remain calm and unified as Americans nationwide react to the tragic events.
Michelle Malkin MSWA: Muslim Soldiers With Attitude
"Michelle Malkin: "Political correctness is the handmaiden of terror." Commenting on "The whitewashing of jihad by the MSM," Michelle Malkin wrote: "I've said it many times over the years and it bears repeating again as cable TV talking heads ask in bewilderment how all the red flags Hasan raised could have been ignored: Political correctness is the handmaiden of terror." from Media Matters
see "The Islamist infiltration of our troops is scandalous. Not one more American, soldier or civilian, must be sacrificed at the altar of multiculturalism, diversity, open borders, and tolerance of the murderous "attitude" of Jihad."
Michelle Malkin from:Michelle Malkin MSWA: Muslim soldiers with attitude by Michelle Malkin at Townhall.com, March 26,2003
Malkin uses the term "MSWA"-"Muslim Soldiers with attitude" but it has several origins of which I'm sure a wordsmith such as Malkin is quite aware- "Niggers with attitude " or "Natives with attitude" so her intention is to use this racial slur to attack Muslim American soldiers and all Muslim Americans who get a bit too "Uppity"
This is yet another example of the underlying racism and race baiting on the part of "Neoconservatives" ("The Conservative Movement" )who believe that avoiding personal insults or racial slurs or other epithets such as "Faggot" "Fags" or "Spics" "wetbacks" "Gooks" "Jap" "Kraut" etc. is not a matter at least in a civilized societ as a matter of common courtesy but in their view is just PC(Political Correctness) nonsense. So if you or I were to use some racial slur against oh so perfect Michelle Malkin that would be Okay to her.
Malkin of course doesn't want to hear about this particular soldier's personal problems or that he was probably suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or something similar which led to his complete mental breakdown . For one thing Malkin might then have to see this" Muslim on a rampage" as a human being, and as an American soldier ,who felt he was being harassed and did not want to go into combat . The military should have- given his mental state- agreed to his request not to be posted in Iraq or Afghanistan.
The other problem Michelle Malkin and other conservatives have is that they characterize any American who doesn't want to fight in Iraq as cowards and that PTSD and such psychological disorders from which large numbers of Veterans suffer from is just a lot of hooey invented by "liberals". This is in fact a serious issue because past American administration have done little to improve detection of such psychological disorders and are unwilling to spend the funding needed to give these American Soldiers the medical and psychological help that they require. Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld just made jokes about such issues facing American veterans.
Michelle Malkin, Bush, Cheney, Fox News and CNN are those who are all too willing to send America's young off to war as they "Romanticize " about it . Yet the soldiers complain that they are not properly trained and arrive in Iraq and aAfghanistan without the high quality equipment they need from Flak Jackets/Body armor to proper armored personnel carriers. American soldiers are given little or no Arabic language instruction or instruction to help them understand the culture in which they are to operate especially since they were told they were liberators and it was not a crusade .But the war came to look more and more like any other Imperialist war of conquest and a crusade against Islam as US soldiers were and are taught to see the enemy as Hajis and that all Iraqis or Afghans are the enemy.
The Neoconservatives don't mind being over-charged by corporations they own or are owned by their friends or are campaign contributors such as Halliburton, KBR, Blackwater etc. but they don't want to spend much on the troops themselves or on them when they finish their multiple Tours of Duty then they are forgotten about except as a patriotic icon and as marching "Tin Soldiers" as it were on Memorial Day U.S.A./Remembrance Day in Canada- but not as human beings whose stories these Neocon don't want to hear because it may upset them or even make them think twice about sending people off to war.
And from blogger atlargely.com/ :
"Fort Hood: a tragedy, not Islamic Jihad..." atlargely.com/, Nov.6, 2009 who discusses the responses of various right-wing bloggers including Ayn Rand disciple Pamels Gellar of Atlas Shrugs :
Note :Gellar even uses the term "lily-livered' which comes from watching too many westerns/oaters I assume or is she attempting to sound 'Folksy'. Or do some Americans talk that way.
Pamela Geller (Atlas Shrugs)
"Their blood is on the hands of Islamic apologists, dhimmis, media, the weak, and lily livered politicians. The media spin on this massacre is another form of attack on America."
"Let me see here. This woman openly supported (and still does) the Iraq war, despite the fact that it was based on lies, despite the fact that our military is over-stressed, despite the fact that the Bush policy of hiding the war from public scrutiny included repeated back-to-back deployments. This woman openly harasses Muslims and openly calls for genocide of Muslims. She was recently even showcased by the pro-Nazi, pro-fascist European "Pro Köln."
So when a soldier did not want to be deployed into hell for a war that we were lied into and when that soldier was harassed by bigots like Geller, the people this bimbo first blames are other Muslims. That is how hate works. It requires no responsibility by the person engaging in it. It is pure emotion without concept of consequences.
The attack on America is not by this lone American soldier gone insane and sadly taking so many lives with him. The attack on America is coming from the extremism and pro-war, anti-civil liberties, corporate sponsored hatriots (Shoq coined this) like Geller. By the way, next time a white man shoots someone, all white people should be blamed - at least according to Geller's logic (if one can call it that)."

CAIR Video: Rep. Ellison Speaks Out Against Muslim 'Intern Spy' Hunt-Oct. 27, 2009
Speaking on the House floor last night, Rep. Keith Ellison read a statement denouncing a group of conservative lawmakers who think an Islamic group may be sending spies into Congress.
The statement, which was co-authored by several minority caucuses, criticized four representatives for seeking an investigation into the Council on American-Islamic Relations in response to claims in a new book, "Muslim Mafia," that CAIR is trying to plant interns on Capitol Hill.

Fox News ongoing smearing of CAIR-2007
Why did Fox News and Megyn Kelly believe that it was their job to defend the racist remarks of Michael Savage. They of course only focus on one or two such remarks he made on his radio show. But Michael Savage has made a living using racial slurs about Muslims, Arabs, Latinos, Mexicans, African-Americans, Native Americans etc. So there is substantial evidence of his racist views.
The issue in this clip gets reduced to "free Speech" and shows little interests in whether what Michael Savage is true or not. To Megyn Kelly and Fox News they see Michael Savage as an American hero like Glenn beck and Rush Limbaugh who in their view "Speak truth to power".

Fort Hood: a tragedy, not Islamic Jihad...atlargely.com/, Nov.6, 2009
The drooling, knuckle-dragging racists calling themselves Americans are busy bashing Muslims and Islam over the Fort Hood shooting. It appears, however, that the shooter - who joined the military BEFORE 9/11 - right out of high school - was being harassed by the other soldiers. Indeed, we also now know that he was an American soldier, born and bred in the USA. He did not recently convert to Islam as some faux-news outlets are claiming. He was always a Muslim. So what made him suddenly go postal?
We are also now learning that he was allegedly afraid to be deployed because of the horrors of war and because he was afraid to go overseas with his harassers. The motive for the shooting seems to be that he simply went postal as a result of war and harassment. Yet the people who are busy bashing Muslims in reaction to the Fort Hood shooting are the exact type of people who harassed this man into a mental breakdown.
I am a Jew. But I have friends who are Muslim. I will always defend Muslims against this kind of hate as I would expect others to defend Jews against this type of hate. Extremism happens in all religions and political views. Christianity is not, in itself, a religion of hate and violence. But if one were to spend some time with some of the pro-life movement, they would come away thinking Christianity is yet another terrorist cult.
...So this is a man born in the US. He is an American who joined the military out of high school. In essence he seems to have had a breakdown, but was being deployed anyway. This brings up the question of PTSD in soldiers and how well we are addressing this issue. But for the glue-sniffers, this is not PTSD, this is not an American soldier sadly driven into a breakdown by the horrors of war. Because of his name, they have already branded him a terrorist, an infiltrator, a Islamofascist.
and then he points to several examples of those who are vehemently anti-Muslim who use the situation to bash all Muslims and any who dare defend Islam or the average Muslim American. He uses Pam Gellar of Atlas Shrugs a disciple of Ayn Rand as an example of this irrational over the top response:
Pamela Geller

Pamela Geller: Poster Girl for Eurofascists
World | Thu, Apr 23, 2009
Pamela Geller of “Atlas Shrugs” and Paul Belien of “Brussels Journal” have been announced as speakers at a German far right event organized by a group called “Pro Köln” — a successor to the notorious fascist group “Deutsche Liga für Volk und Heimat” (the “German League for People and Homeland”).
One of the main organizers of “Pro Köln” is Manfred Rouhs. Here are two photos of Rous with hardcore neo-Nazi activist Axel Reitz, who the local media call “the Hitler of Cologne.”
--- Christian Worch (born 1956) is one of the most important figures of the German neo-Nazi scene.
In 1974 Worch started a militant group called the Hansabande in Hamburg, along with Michael Kühnen. The group defaced Jewish cemeteries, assaulted leftists and foreigners[1], and denied the Holocaust. Worch took part in one especially well-known campaign under the motto “I am an ass to believe that Jews were gassed in Germany” (Ich Esel glaube, daß in Deutschland Juden vergast worden sind). The group gradually became the Aktionsfront Nationaler Sozialisten (ANS, Action Front of National Socialists) in 1977. Worch and Kühnen were also close to the now-banned Wiking-Jugend (Viking Youth).
Kühnen was arrested in 1979 and Worch took over leadership of the ANS. In 1980 he was convicted to a three-year prison sentence, despite being defended by Jürgen Rieger during his trial. In 1983, the organization now known as the ANS/NA (Aktionsfront Nationaler Sozialisten/Nationale Aktivisten, Action Front of National Socialists/National Activists) was banned, so Worch joined the Freiheitliche Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (FAP, Free German Workers’ Party) and became vice-chairman. As the Nationale Liste (National List) was founded in 1989, he became active in its executive committee. He edited its magazine, Index, until September 1991 and was especially active in Anti-Antifa work. In this campaign, lists of names and addresses of left-wing and anti-fascist activists and organizations were published; this led to attacks on some of the people listed. Worch was one of the main initiators of the campaign.
and so it goes,
GORD.
