Paul Ryan a devotee of Ayn Rand up til a couple of months ago
Some video clips of critics of Ayn Rand both conservative and liberal.

VP candidate Paul Ryan is a devotee or if you like "True Believer " in the philosophy of ultra-conservative libertarian Ayn Rand.  Once Ryan was chosen as running mate with Mitt Romney and people began questioning his devotion to Ayn Rand's ideology he has tried publicly to put some distance between himself and the anti-Religion , anti-Altruism, anti-government ,pro-abortion libertarian extremist philosophy of Ayn Rand .

Ayn Rand preached that "selfishness" is a higher value then "altruism" . That is committing one's self to an action which will benefit other people and will not  have immediate or long term benefit for the person performing this action of self-sacrifice is to Ayn Rand the worst thing one could do since it has no payoff.

Here's a funny bit about Ayn Rand in which arch-conservative William F. Buckley attacks her philosophy and notes correctly in my opinion how boring her novel Atlas Shrugged is and how it lacks any humanity . It is written as if by a machine and has nothing positive to say except for the elite she is writing about who now do not have to feel guilty about anything they do because once in their rightful positions they will shape a new reality by shaping or changing the future to fit their whims.

William Buckley on Ayn Rand & Atlas Shrugged

Talking to Rose, patron-saint of the conservative movement , Bill buckley chats about ayn and her magnum opus atlas shrugged. On atlas shrugged, WFB:"I had to flog myself to read it." On ayn, WFB : "Her scorn for charity, for altruism was such as to build up an unfeeling system"

And here are some examples of some scathing comments on Ayn Rand as philosopher and novelist by conservatives Christopher Hitchens and William F. Buckley Jr. and liberal Ralph Nader .

Her philosophy is without any elitist and disparages in her mind useless emotions and actions such as compassion for the plight of those less fortunnate and acts of altruism to help others when you can from holding a door open for someone behind you or giving some spare change to some destitute homeless individual or donating money or other goods to help people experiencing a natural disaster or a war whether in your own community or a community hundreds of miles away or even on the other side of the globe such as floods, TZunami ,volcanic eruption , hurricanes .

To help out as an individuals or as part of an NGO or by one's own government Ayn would find this pointless unless there is something to be gained by the individual donor or volunteer . So what are ostensibly altruistic acts may in fact be rather calculated for whatever reason ie seeking praise from others thereby boosting one's elf esteem or to help one to be more successful to move up the chain of command in whatever organization one is involved in .

In terms of ethical or moral theories Ayn Rand's objectivism and her ideology of selfishness in which one commits to an action based upon some self-serving benifits to be derived from the action is akin to what I consider to be the morally baknrupt  philosophy of act-utilitarianism by which each individual act is weighed for its costs to the indivual to what benefit they may receive.

David Frum breaking ranks with his fellow Republicans calling them ineffective and far too partisn at a time when America is facing an economic crisis. In this video and the other two below David Frum sounds more reasonable than most members of the GOP.

Here's David Frum in 2008 as he begins to publicly criticize the Republican Party leadership.Frum believed that the GOP has some good alternative plans to offer up to the Obama administration instead they spent their time acting liking buffoons and thereby appearing to be less serious less engaged and less sympathetic with average Americans who were hurting become of the economic Wall Street disaster.

David Frum Calls the GOP Brain Dead for Their Theatrics Over the Stimulus Bill

Uploaded by on Feb 19, 2009
On 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. David Frum calls the GOP brain dead for their theatrics over the stimulus bill and says they should be having policy debates instead. The trouble with his argument is that they did have those policy debates. They got some tax cuts into the bill, and tax cuts aren't going to get our economy out of the mess it's in.

Conservative David Frum became person non grata in the conservative movement several years ago when he criticized the GOP for being overly influenced by bombastic, arrogant, race-baiting, Obama hating , talk radio star Rush Limbaugh which to the right was considered blasphemey .

Matthews To David Frum On Rush Limbaugh "Have You Had Any Physical Threats"

But he went further to attack the influence of Fox News on the Republican party which in both cases has led the Republicans to adopt a strident and undemocratic tone as they merely used tactics of obstructionism against any actions the Obama administration might take without any interest on the part of the GOP to come up with a workable compromise. Compromise became a dirty word associated in the minds of conservative with appeasement which they saw as giving into their enemies . So from the beginning Rush Limbaugh and John Boener etc. main interest was to make sure Obama was a one term president by doing all they could to ensure Obama was not able to pass legilation to help out average wotking people and the poor in these hard economic times. They stopped Obama again and again from pass any real reform legislation even those reforms which before the 2008 election the GOP also believed in. So the GOP has become the party of extremists and the party of "NO".

To a great extent one could refer to the Republicans as no longer acting like responsible elected officials who would put the naytion before their partisan concerns. In fact they would prefer that the economic situation worsen to prove Obamas policies were not working.

Conservative David Frum Slams Right Wing Media - FOX Responsible for Creating Alternate Reality.

In this next article David Frum takes down uberconservative abrasive Michelle Malkin who wrote a book defending America in WWII for puting Japanese Americans into concentration camps.
Frum takes issue with her and other Republicans bending over backwards to defend Mitt Romney's 47% remark which was recorded secretly in which Romney states flat out as a fact that 47% of Americans are lazy moochers including children, college students, seniors , disabled war veterans and of course the majority of African Americans and Hispanic Americans.
Frumm is questioning the wisdom of other Republicans defending this remark rather than put another spin on it or ignore but instead Right-wings loons are as usual doubling down.

Why Does Michelle Malkin Hate Half Her Country?
by David Frum
, at The Daily Beast ,Sep 21,2012

xxxx I'm about to quote something pretty deplorable, but not in order to deplore it. It is from the inimitable Michelle Malkin. (And when I say inimitable, I mean it literally. I confess: whenever I wanted a character in Patriots to say something truly over the top, I put a small portion of a Michelle Malkin transcript in his/her mouth. I could not - would not have dared - to invent anything near so vituperative.)

Here’s the quote that has liberal finger-waggers and Republican wet-finger-in-the-wind windbags in meltdown mode:

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what,” Romney explained to an audience member who asked how the candidate was going to change the “we’ll take care of you” mentality of Obama voters. “All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. And they will vote for this president no matter what.”
This portion of voters consists of “people who pay no income tax,” Romney explained. “I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

He’s talking, of course, about the Peggy the Moochers and Henrietta Hugheses of the world: savior-based Obama supporters for whom the cult of personality trumps all else. He’s talking about the Sandra Flukes and Julias of the world: Nanny State grievance-mongers who have been spoon-fed identity politics and victim Olympics from preschool through grad school and beyond. And he’s talking about the encrusted entitlement clientele who range from the Section 8 housing mob in Atlanta who caused a near-riot to the irresponsible, debt-ridden homeowners who mortgaged themselves into oblivion and want their bailout now, now, now.

The question is not to deplore, but to understand. Where do emotions like these come from? How is it that so many who seem to be such golden winners of life's lottery manage to generate so much hatred, fear, and contempt for those who have fared less well? It would make an ugly kind of sense if such rage were expressed by those who had less against those who had more. But who stands at the highest window in the building to drop slop onto the heads of the unfortunates standing 10 or 12 stories below?

and in another article David Frum as an outlier takes on other members of the Republica/Conservative establishment.

The Sinister Message Behind Romney's "Gaffe"by David Frum at The Daily Beast .Sep 18, 2012

David Brooks blames the Romney 47% comments on maladroitness: the awkward mis-expression of a man pretending to be something he's not.

Likely so.

But they also reveal that Romney has been reshaped by this campaign. The dread to which Romney gives voice in his Boca Raton speech - that "makers" are about to be electorally overwhelmed by "takers" - is a dread expressed again and again by conservative media and conservative thought-leaders. "Democracy is two lions and a lamb voting on what's for dinner": how often have we heard that old country-club quip repeated these past four years? Only this time, the quip is repeated not as a joke, but with real fear.

The background to so much of the politics of the past four years is the mood of apocalyptic terror that has gripped so much of the American upper class.

Hucksters of all kinds have battened on this terror. They tell them that free enterprise is under attack; that Obama is a socialist, a Marxist, a fascist, an anti-colonialist. Only by donating to my think tank, buying my book, watching my network, going to my movie, can you - can we - stop him before he seizes everything to give to his base of "bums," as Charles Murray memorably called them.

And what makes it all both so heart-rending and so outrageous is that all this is occurring at a time when economically disadvantaged Americans have never been so demoralized and passive, never exerted less political clout. No Coxey's army is marching on Washington, no sit-down strikes are paralyzing factories, no squatters are moving onto farmer's fields. Occupy Wall Street immediately fizzled, there is no protest party of the political left.

The only radical mass movement in this country is the Tea Party, a movement to defend the interests of elderly incumbent beneficiaries of the existing welfare state. Against that movement is a government of liberal technocrats dependent on campaign donations from a different faction of the American super-rich than that which backs Mitt Romney himself.

From the greatest crisis of capitalism since the 1930s, the rights and perquisites of wealth have emerged undiminished - and the central issue in this election is whether those rights and perquisites shall be enhanced still more, or whether they should be allowed to slip back to the level that prevailed during the dot.com boom.

Yet even so, the rich and the old are scared witless! Watch the trailer of Dinesh D'Souza's new movie to glimpse into their mental universe: chanting swarthy mobs, churches and banks under attack, angry black people grabbing at other people's houses.

It's all a scam, but it's a spectacularly effective scam. Mitt Romney tried to make use of the scam, and now instead has fallen victim to it himself.

I'd say somebody should write a book about all, but then I remember: somebody already did.
