Advice to failed writers on how to become well off and successful and a celebrity in a few easy steps:
OK, here it is - and you need to sit down for this - it's called "The Islamophobia cash cow."
Post 9/11, the fastest and surest way to gain celebrity status in the West and garner respect and attention you would otherwise never achieve on your own mediocre merit is to go on an "Islam-bashing" campaign.
And, mind you, you don't need to be an expert on the subject matter, just make sure to quote verses from the Qur'an out of context, cite Osama Bin Laden as the role model of Muslim behavior, bank on tired canaries like "Islam oppresses women," and "Islam was spread by the sword," and other washed out cliches, and voila!
You're a celebrity, a famous author (a rich, famous author, mind you), a Good Samaritan defending the civilized world from the evils of Islam.
Nonie Darwish: Blasphemy & Incitement Nonie Darwish is the author, most recently, of "Cruel and Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law," as well as the memoir, "Now They Call Me Infidel." This presentation was given as part of the Ethics & Public Policy Center's series on Shariah and international libel laws.
Nonie Darwish argues that in Islam one is not to question the Quran or the traditions and teachings compiled in the Hadith. But she puts forth the rather dubious claim that in the West and according to Judeo-Christian principles and values anything can be discussed and questioned as part a long tradition in the West. So Nothing is beyond question-tell that to the Evangelical Fundamentalist who believe that it is heretical to question the literal inerrant truth of the Bible. This notion does not hold true even with questioning neoconservative arguments and views and policies which are seen as having the force of "religious dogma" . According to the Neoconservatives and their media Shills to question Samuel Huntington's theory about "the Clash of Civilizations" is considered heresy as is questioning the American invasion and occupation of Iraq and the on going war in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Neoconservatives also argue that torture and abuse of POWs is not immoral or illegal and that it has resulted in actionable intelligence. But the rest of the International Community believes that the Invasion of Iraq was wrong and constitutes a "War Crime". The International Community also condemns as immoral and illegal the abuse and torture of POWs or Enemy Combatants or so called detainees. Secondly the agreement amongst impartial experts who are not working for some extreme rightwing political or religious organization or a Faux Think Tank run by Neocons is that torture besides being illegal and immoral is also not a practical policy. One it does not lead to a lot of actionable intelligence-the tortured person will say anything to get the torturers to stop. So the individual being tortured may relate some truth mixed in with fabrications. From the practical or utilitarian point of view one has to weigh what is gained by torture and what are the possible unintended consequences ie creating more enemies and more "blow-back". According to experts on terrorism and terrorists organizations the use of torture just makes one's enemies more determined and increases support for their cause in the general population and is a great recruitment device for recruiting more terrorists.
Hannity calls Nonie Darwish an expert on Islam Nonie Darwish, an American of Arab/Moslem origin, comments on the recent (and tense) interview on Hannity & Colmes with Muslim leader who recently spoke at DNC winter meeting.
Another common theme for these outspoken former Muslims and their Christian and secularist fellow travelers is that they have suffered in the past when they lived in the Middle East and are now suffering as they are attacked for speaking out claiming Muslims and Pro-Muslim groups are trying to shut them down. So Nonie Darwish like other outspoken Muslims or former Muslims is a martyr having been threatened, banned from some universities or receiving a hostile reception. But such attacks on her merely raises her esteem as one who speaks "truth to Power" in the eyes of Western anti-Islamists and the Radical Christian Right. This seems odd since she and her fellow travelers seem to get on TV and radio and are featured in newspapers and magazines and on blogs and take part in various conferences in which they get the chance to speak about their experiences and to spread their hatred of all Muslims. Nonie Darwish for instance divides Muslims into two major categories those who are involved in the planning and the committing of terrorist actions and those who remain silent about such actions but who secretly applaud such actions. To her there is no such thing as a " moderate Muslim ".
What nominee to Obama administration Harold Koh said was not that all of Islamic Sharia law should be adopted into US jurisprudence but rather that there might be a case made that Sharia law could be followed in certain appropriate cases in US law.But the Islamophobes and anti-Obama crowd of course take a simple statement out of context and make it into a major policy statement. Note he is talking about certain legal cases where and if appropriate. So any Sharia specific law if it goes against the basic laws and rights of American citizens then in such cases it would not be appropriate to apply Sharia law. So Muslim men would not be permitted to beat their wives or have woman executed for adultery or some other offence. Fox News and Nonie Darwish ignore the fact that Koh's statement is a qualified statement about Sharia and not some unconditional support for Sharia.
