*David Horowitz exaggerates and fear mongers about there being too many Professors at American Universities who are "liberal' and "Leftist Extremists". Note the characterization of "liberals' or Leftist extremists" is a much broader concept in American parlance than it is outside the United States. Americans in general are still hopelessly trapped into a "cold War " mindset as it were.They still have trouble dealing with dissent and dissidents. Conservative Americans and even Conservative Intellectuals tend to have more in common with their counterparts in the former Soviet Union 's Communist party intellectuals who were also unable to think as it were outside the Box and so aided the calcification of the Soviet Union's policy making that is they were unable to adapt enough to a changing situation.
According to one study the reason there are few Ultra-Conservative Professors is because as Conservatives they tend to be too dogmatic and authoritarian in their views and so have trouble exposing students to various alternatives in critiquing what ever is being studied. Another reason given is that the private sector offers more financial success than does the teaching at most universities. This is not a slight on a Conservatives' aptitude or intelligence

David Horowitz like other Neocons and American Conservatives and the Religious Right believe that the universities in America have been taken over by Leftist extremists . They complain that professors at these universities promote a leftist ideology and never present other viewpoints which contradict or question this leftist ideology. First we need to note that the term "leftists" in the way these Conservatives use it is rather broad . The definition is so broad it includes any critique of America's history or of American of domestic and foreign policies or of human rights in America or the economic system of unfettered capitalism. These conservatives are for instance anti-union, anti-Gay, anti-feminists, anti-diversity, anti-pluralism, anti-multiculturalism anti-immigrant, anti-minority rights. If they had their way Jim Crow would still dominated the Deep South and women would not have all the rights they have fought for. As I have argued previously these conservatives do offer a small concession to women and minorities since they believe that even among these inferior groups there are those who are in fact exceptional and are therefore almost equal to their male white heterosexual (Judeo-)Christian Upper-middle class or upper class and wealthy Americans and so should be encouraged to go beyond their class or group.(As Jane Austen and other narrow minded Brits would say "going beyond their station")
Therefore they believe to argue that certain groups in America are unfairly discriminated against is seen as being irrational and unAmerican. These conservatives were the same ones who were against the Civil Rights movement and the Feminist movement or Gay Rights movement or ensuring the physically and mentally challenged or disabled are given equal access and treated fairly by society.To these Conservatives who believe in "rugged individualism" and the folk traditions or myths of the first colonists in America or of the Old West everyone should fend for themselves and if they can't then let them starve or die in a ditch on the side of the road -good Samaritans they believes are altruistic fools. So giving any such help to those who are disabled or who have been unfairly discriminated against is seen as UnAmerican and as a form of "Creeping Socialism".
Outside the united states most western nations have a mixed economy of regulated capitalism and socialist public programs such as universal healthcare,government subsidized daycare,schools and universities. There is also legislation for instance allowing for longer maternity leave for female workers in some cases for as much as a year during which time the government provides financial aid or her employer provides financial aid. In some countries besides the mother being allowed to take a year off of work the husband /father is also encouraged to take a year off of work for the benefit of their children. Many of these benefits are seen by the majority of citizens in these countries as reasonable and as the basic rights of their citizens while Americans see such worker benefits as a form of social engineering smacking of socialism or even Communism. Americans have been indoctrinated to believe that work and making it and possibly becoming wealthy is more important than living a good life in which people spend a lot of time with family, their children and friends they see this as more reasonable life-style rather than being in constant competition with the rest of society. This is why Americans favors words and slogans such as "Winners " and "losers", or Winner Takes all, You Snooze you loose" they may sound a bit strange but they are part of America's Consumerism and Materialism. This is why many non-Americans find it disingenuous when they talk about "Family Values" and blame its demise on "Liberals" "Leftists" & "secular humanists" all of whom prefer to live a good quality life rather than be caught up in a materialistic Capitalist enslavement.
Here in Canada for instance we take free medical services as the right of all citizens. Canadians do not believe that people should be punished economically for needing medical services.
As we have seen in previous posts that David Horowitz or Daniel Pipes see any critique of American history, its economic system, its foreign policies as being promoted by leftist extremists especially during the reign of George W. Bush. They believe anyone who is not supportive of the entire agenda of the Neoconservatives, the American Conservative Movement and the Religious Right is by definition not just "liberal" but a "leftist extremist" To be against the US invasion and occupation of Iraq and the manner in which this occupation has been carried out is seen by neoconservatives as anti-American and by extension they believe as being pro-terrorists. Like the Evangelical Fundamentalists the Neocons see everything in stark terms of black and white as Bush infamously proclaimed to the world "You are either with us or against us" which amounts to saying that Nations either support the US Global War on Terror or these nations are on the side of the terrorists and against America. This was the point at which a number of countries became less enthusiastic about supporting the United States and the Bush/Cheney Regime because they had qualms or misgivings about US policies or the manner in which these policies were to be applied .A number of countries did not agree that Saddam and Iraq were a serious and imminent threat to the United States or to European countries or any other country including Israel in the Middle East.
According to the Neocons who supported the Bush/Cheney Regime it was tantamount to treason to question the administrations beliefs about Saddam or its commitment to invade Iraq as a supposedly preemptive attack against a potential threat. Which Saddam was not. Meanwhile Americans watched as the US military's made for Television "Shock and Awe "/ Real-Life Reality show night after night on their TVs as if they were watching a video game while it filled them with some satisfaction at the least believing they were finally getting their revenge for the 9/11 attacks even though the Iraqi people were innocent but yet were being blown to pieces to satisfy some deep seated anger within the American psyche. So one wonders even now who were the barbarians those insane religious fanatics who attacked the United States on 9/11 believing that it was only by such a barbaric gesture they could get America's attention for what they believed were their grievances. Or are the real Barbarians those who should know better and believe themselves to be civilized rational human beings who had various choices about how to respond to such a lethal act. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.The Americans who had a military might that dwarfs what any other nation on earth has could have followed a different course. Ah but even civilized people it appears enjoy a good show and get a kick out blowing other people into shreds. Any excuse will do whether it is Bin Laden or Saddam or Commander in Chief President Bush or the Israeli Knnessit or the Prime Minister of England Tony Blair
So when a university professor in a course on American political , religious or social history allows student to think for themselves and do the necessary research to attempt to understand a particular issue without being told what their conclusions ougt to be the Neocons see this as encouraging students to not accept "American Exceptionalism" or that America can do no wrong and that America is on a mission directed by God or that America is following a path which is an extension of the Natural Laws ie Manifest destiny and the belief that the United States is the only truly free and sovereign nation.

To those who are familiar with contemporary Lebanese history, the mention of the terms "Phalangist militia" and "South Lebanon Army" (SLA) will bring to mind the massacres of Palestinian refugees inside the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in 1982 and the detainment, torturing, and murder of anti-Israeli Lebanese and Palestinians at the Khiam Detention Center in South Lebanon between 1985 and 2000. Both tragedies were carried out by militias commanded and staffed by pro-Israeli Maronite Christians, and both were ultimately engineered and funded by the IDF. According to even the loosest of definitions, both tragedies are traitorous acts of terror; according to consensus opinion of the major human rights organizations of the world, they are also crimes against humanity.
"It is indisputable that systematic torture occurred in Khiam. And the continuing partnership between Israel and the SLA on matters related to this prison implicates Lebanese and Israelis with legal responsibility for criminal actions. In addition to the periodic visits of GSS [Shin Bet] personnel, the defense ministry's affidavit admitted that Israel and the SLA 'consult each other regarding the arrest and release of people in the Khiam facility' and that 'information from the interrogations in Khiam is transferred by the SLA to Israeli security forces.'" [3]
Brigitte Gabriel defends those who committed said atrocities. As a member of the Maronite sect of her erstwhile homeland, she defends her people at every turn, while claiming that it has been Hizballah and every other anti-Israeli Muslim group in Lebanon that has been doing all the unlawful detentions, torturing, and terrorism. [4] Brigitte always fails to mention that her people were collaborators with a hostile, foreign, occupying state (Israel), and that her fellow Maronites of the Phalange Party and SLA committed crimes against humanity against their own people:
"The Maronites form the base community for the quasi-fascist Kata'ib Party, better known in the West as the Phalange Party (see Hizbullah, Israel, and the Gemayel Assassination) and have been allies of Israel and the West in Lebanon since at least early 1980s.
The Israelis killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and Lebanese in the country from 1982 until 2000 (a point Gabriel seems to neglect) but it was Maronite militias who actually perpetrated the Israeli-sanctioned massacres at Sabra and Shatila in 1982. Despite this, contrary to Gabriel's claims, the Maronites not only survive but wield considerable power in Lebanon, including 34 out of 128 seats in the current Lebanese parliament.Gabriel and her family come from Marjayoun in southern Lebanon. Marjayoun was the headquarters of Israeli occupation forces and Israel's proxy, the South Lebanon Army (SLA). In 2000, Hizbullah drove the Israelis from the country and the SLA collapsed."

"[The SLA] was never fully trusted by the Israeli army which trained, armed and financed it. However, its members were paid salaries of $500 - a handsome sum in an economically depressed area, and many of their families found labouring jobs in Israel. The 2,500-strong force has always been left to do the dirtiest work for Israel. Most notoriously, they were in nominal charge of al-Khiam prison south of Marjayoun. On Tuesday, local villagers broke down the prison door with their bare hands as the SLA fled. Weeping and fainting with emotion, prisoners - some of them captive for more than 10 years - were reunited with their families. Many hundreds of Lebanese prisoners had been held there over the years without trial and without charge, under inhuman conditions with routine torture. . . . Often the detainees were held merely as hostages, because they had relatives in Hezbollah, or because they refused to collaborate with Israel."
"In May 2000, as the IDF started to withdraw, its proxy force, the SLA, disintegrated rapidly; within hours the whole of the formerly IDF-held strip became a rolling victory carnival for Hizbullah. The SLA men who had guarded and run the notorious prison and torture center at Khiam slipped away from their posts and the people of Khiam, a predominantly Shiite town, rushed in to free their loved ones. Hizbullah's yellow flags flew exuberantly right up to Israel's northern border. Villagers who had over the years been forced out of the security zone or the much-damaged areas to its north crowded back homewards in cavalcades of cars and tractors. Some SLA members fled to Israel. But the bloodbath feared by many Israelis (and some Lebanese) never occurred. The Hizbullah leadership issued strict instructions prohibiting acts of vengeance in the liberated areas as well as violations of the international border with Israel. Both orders were obeyed."

DHIMMITUDE:The Status of Non-Muslim Minorities Under Islamic Rule
Dhimmitude: the Islamic system of governing populations conquered by jihad wars, encompassing all of the demographic, ethnic, and religious aspects of the political system. The word "dhimmitude" as a historical concept, was coined by Bat Ye'or in 1983 to describe the legal and social conditions of Jews and Christians subjected to Islamic rule. The word "dhimmitude" comes from dhimmi, an Arabic word meaning "protected". Dhimmi was the name applied by the Arab-Muslim conquerors to indigenous non-Muslim populations who surrendered by a treaty (dhimma) to Muslim domination. Islamic conquests expanded over vast territories in Africa, Europe and Asia, for over a millennium (638-1683). The Muslim empire incorporated numerous varied peoples which had their own religion, culture, language and civilization. For centuries, these indigenous, pre-Islamic peoples constituted the great majority of the population of the Islamic lands. Although these populations differed, they were ruled by the same type of laws, based on the shari'a.
This similarity, which includes also regional variations, has created a uniform civilization developed throughout the centuries by all non-Muslim indigenous people, who were vanquished by a jihad-war and governed by shari'a law. It is this civilization which is called dhimmitude. It is characterized by the different strategies developed by each dhimmi group to survive as non-Muslim entity in their Islamized countries. Dhimmitude is not exclusively concerned with Muslim history and civilization. Rather it investigates the history of those non-Muslim peoples conquered and colonized by jihad.
Dhimmitude encompasses the relationship of Muslims and non-Muslims at the theological, social, political and economical levels. It also incorporates the relationship between the numerous ethno-religious dhimmi groups and the type of mentality that they have developed out of their particular historical condition which lasted for centuries, even in some Muslim countries, till today.
Dhimmitude is an entire integrated system, based on Islamic theology. It cannot be judged from the circumstantial position of any one community, at a given time and in a given place. Dhimmitude must be appraised according to its laws and customs, irrespectively of circumstances and political contingencies.

Formed in 1936 as a Maronite paramilitary youth organization by Pierre Jumayyil (who modeled it on the fascist organizations he had observed while in Berlin as an Olympic athlete), the Phalange, or Phalanxes (Kataib in Arabic), was authoritarian and very centralized, and its leader was all powerful. It quickly grew into a major political force in Mount Lebanon. After at first allying itself with the French Mandate authorities, the Phalange sided with those calling for independence; as a result, the party was dissolved in 1942 by the French high commissioner (it was restored after The French left Lebanon). Despite this early dispute, over the years the Phalange has been closely associated with France in particular and the West in general. In fact, for many years the party newspaper, Al Amal, was printed in Arabic and French.
Consistent with its authoritarian beginnings, Phalangist ideology has been on the right of the political spectrum. Although it has embraced the need to "modernize," it has always favored the preservation of the sectarian status quo. The Phalange Party motto is "God, the Fatherland, and the Family," and its doctrine emphasizes a free economy and private initiative. Phalangist ideology focuses on the primacy of preserving the Lebanese nation, but with a "Phoenician" identity, distinct from its Arab, Muslim neighbors. Party policies have been uniformly anticommunist and anti-Palestinian and have allowed no place for pan-Arab ideals.

The Sabra and Shatila massacre (Arabic: مذبحة صبرا وشاتيلا Maḏbaḥat Ṣabrā wa Shātīlā) — or Sabra and Chatila massacre — was a massacre of Palestinian and Lebanese civilians carried out between 16 and 18 September 1982 by the Lebanese Forces militia group, following the assassination of Phalangist leader and president-elect Bachir Gemayel. The Israeli Defense Force (IDF), who surrounded Beirut's Palestinian refugee camps, allowed the Lebanese Forces Christian militia to enter two of these refugee camps, Sabra and Shatila
The Israeli government established the Kahan Commission to investigate, and in early 1983 it found Israel indirectly responsible for the event. The report said the possibility of a revenge attempt was "foreseeable", and that Israeli commanders should not have permitted Phalangists into the camps. Ariel Sharon was found to bear personal responsibility[3] for "ignoring the danger of bloodshed and revenge" and for "not taking appropriate measures to prevent bloodshed." The commission demanded that Sharon resign as head of the Defence Ministry, which he did, reluctantly.
In 1982, an independent commission chaired by Sean MacBride concluded that the government of Israel has no valid reasons under international law for its invasion of Lebanon. It also concluded that the Israeli authorities or forces were involved directly or indirectly in the massacres at Sabra and Shatila
