But it appears the Bush Regime and our own Stephen Harper feel they are no longer obliged to follow the the rules of the Geneva Conventions or other International Agreements or Laws. For instance Canadian troops in Afghanistan have been told to hand over POWs or detainees to American authorities or Afghan authorities even though it is quite probable that these detainees will be abused and torured by American officials including private contractors or the CIA and that the Afghan military is also known to abuse and torture "detainees" . Note they prefer the word " detainee " thereby by a little verbal slight of hand as it were denying them the status of Prisoners of War or Enemy Combatants.

There are longer versions of the interrogation of Khadr at YouTube - but it is hearbreaking as he accuses the Canadian official of not really caring what happens to him- when the boy tells the official about abuse the official says he's making it all up but as is apparent the official does nothing to check into the story since he knows the Canadian Government wants to know as little as possible about what's going on at Gitmo so they can have "Plausible Deniabilty" which is all any bureaucrat really cares about.

Canadians should be ashamed but it appears most Canadians are indifferent to Omar Khadr or to anybody else who has been detained or tortured in our so called War on Terror. Is the lack of concern merely indifference or is it racism or a belief that we need to exact revenge for Canadian troops killed in Afghanistan. And does it matter if those who are detained , abused or tortured are guilty or innocent as long as we get our" pound of flesh".

Republican Congressman Peter J. Hoekstra, who released unclassified portions of the report, observed, “This is about as ugly as it gets.”

Will the Justice Department pursue criminal prosecutions against the CIA officials involved in the lying and cover-up, as it did against Martha Stewart?

C.I.A. Withheld Data in Peru Plane Crash Inquiry By MARK MAZZETTI Published: November 20, 2008

WASHINGTON — An internal investigation by the Central Intelligence Agency has found that the agency withheld crucial information from federal investigators who spent years trying to determine whether C.I.A. officers committed crimes related to the accidental downing of a missionary plane in Peru in 2001.
The August 2008 report by John L. Helgerson, the C.I.A.’s inspector general, could lead the Justice Department to reopen its investigation into the shooting, examining in particular whether senior C.I.A. officers obstructed justice or lied to Congress by burying details about the episode and the C.I.A.’s broader counternarcotics program.

A C.I.A. surveillance aircraft mistakenly identified the plane as a drug-smuggling aircraft, and a Peruvian military jet shot it down, killing an American missionary and her 7-month-old daughter. The Justice Department closed its investigation into the matter in 2005, declining to prosecute agency officers for any actions related to the episode.

But Mr. Helgerson’s report, parts of which were made public on Thursday, said that the Justice Department investigators and Congress were never allowed access to internal C.I.A. reviews that portrayed the downing as one mistake among many in the agency’s counternarcotics program in Peru. The report said the agency routinely authorized interceptions of suspected drug planes “without adequate safeguards to protect against the loss of innocent life.”

The counternarcotics program was begun under President Clinton in 1994. The report said it had operated for years outside legal boundaries set by the White House.
In releasing unclassified parts of the report on Thursday, Representative Peter J. Hoekstra of Michigan, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, said he was asking the Justice Department to consider whether the C.I.A.’s actions after the incident amounted to obstruction of justice. “This is about as ugly as it gets,” said Mr. Hoekstra, who added that the Justice Department had closed its investigation based on a review of “incomplete information.”

Meanwhile the Religious Right is complaining about losing the election claiming it was because the Republican candidates were not far enough to the right. Whereas the more popular view is that in part voters were scared away by the extremist rhetoric of Palin and McCain combined with the economic crisis and that McCain was seen as too similar in his policies to the Bush Regime.

I fully understand the Religious Right's need to explain the trouncing the Republican Party experienced at the polls and fight back against the idea that they were somehow to blame. I likewise understand their standard post-electoral trick when explaining such losses is to claim that the reason the GOP lost not because of the Right, but because the candidates and the party were not sufficiently committed to their right-wing agenda.

But what I don't understand is this incessant effort to rewrite history, especially when the time frame at issue was just a few weeks ago:

Some pro-lifers, [Mike] Huckabee said, abandoned the Republican Party in recent years because it failed to stand up for pro-life principles. Democrats took control of the House and Senate in 2006 and then padded their majorities this year.
"We didn't lose elections because we were pro-life," Huckabee said. "We really started losing elections when we didn't act like that mattered. And so, the people who really do care about issues -- whether it's marriage, life, Second Amendment -- felt like, 'If this party isn't going to have a significant different stand than the Democrats, then why not just vote for the Democrats and give them a chance?'"

Yet Bill'O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Malkin, Michael Savage , Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity & the Queen of these Hate Mongers Ann Coulter and other conservatives of the Hate Talk Radio & Television circuits & The Neoconservative Propagandists Network FoX News think Black Americans are just too sensitive . They claim that this is just a matter of Political Correctness gone to extremes. These Shock Jocks spew their venom and hate in the name of Free Speech. But not all speech is acceptable. Speech which is inflammatory which stirs up hatred of a minority is reprehensible and should be treated as a violent act. Speech which leads others to commit acts of violence against members of one group or another is indefensible. One hopes that more and more Americans will become wise to the lies and distortions promulgated by these Media Stars making them irrelevant in the days to come as Barack Obama takes his place as the President of the United States. The " Noose " in America was used in the Lynchings of thousands of mainly African-Americas but was also used on some white Americans. It is odd how so many American's are unaware of their country's violent history towards black people in America. Most of those lynched were not guilty of any crime. What some may have been guilty of is disobeying the "Jim Crow Laws " in the South . Some of the men or boys lynched for instance were guilty of some minor indiscretion such as merely looking at a white woman or for not kowtowing to whites especially those in positions of authority. Some were guilty of trying to exercise their right to register to vote or to actually dainge to try to vote.To complain to authorities about some injustice done to them by the authorities or some white person was also seen as grounds for "Lynching". The other thing that I have pointed out before is that many of the Lynchings which took place did not take place in some remote area out of the public's but were carried out by large groups of white people in the public square with little or no resistance from those in authority. Police and Sherrifs & mayors and the so called upstanding members of the community were just as often as not leading the Lynch Mob. At times there was a carnival attitude or atmosphere surrounding a lynching so sometimes whole families attended and brought with them a picnic lunch. So "lynchings " were not always done by the Ku Klux Klan in full regalia of hoods and all.Often they were carried out by average white citizens who took photographs of the poor soul who had been lynched and they took pictures of themselves and of their friends and neighbors so they could put these pictures in their family scrap-books for something to look back on fondly years later. And yet they called themselves civilized Christians.  And as is noted in the video documentary below the victims were not just hanged from a tree but were often stripped naked and then tortured and burned alive . Of course there is still a segment of American society who don't even now see that they or their ancestors did anything wrong. Afterall to the average racist whether or not a member of the Ku Klux Klan or the American Nazi Party or some other White Supremacist organization believes that black people are " subhuman ' and that they need to be controlled by their so called "superiors" the White Christians. But for some reason few Americans before the 1960s spoke out against the barbaric practice of "Lynching ". Lynching was seen by White Southerners as just part of their culture and tradional way of life . So to interfere in " Lynchings " was seen as an attack on the whole Southern Way of Life.

Below are a number of incidents in which nooses were used in Hate Crimes: Noose Found Hanging in Long Island Police Station- Oct. 23, 2007

Noose Found by Employees 180 Connect at Work - Racism-Oct. 23, 2007 James Jackson, a 26-year-old black employee of 180 Connect, was preparing for another day of installing cable, telephone and Internet service to residential customers of Cablevision in Nassau County, New York on December 7. When he walked to the fenced-off area to pick up equipment for the day's jobs he looked up and was shocked to see a vicious, racist symbol in his workplace. A noose was hanging in the fenced-off equipment area, visible to the dozens of installers, the majority of whom are black, but accessible only to his boss and an equipment manager, both of whom are white.

Noose Found at Ground Zero World Trade Center Post Office-October 23, 2007 This one, police say, was hanging from a light pole outside the Church Street post office, near ground zero. Postal workers on the second floor noticed it at about 1 p.m. Thursday, at which point the building management company removed it and police are now investigating. There is no indication on whether the noose - the murder weapon of choice for lynchings and as a result, a symbol of racial oppression - was a threat aimed at a specific person.

Two Nooses Found in Hempstead New York NY - Racism Oct. 23 2007 Word that two nooses had been found in a Hempstead town garage came down hard in the mainly minority community of Roosevelt Wednesday. Town Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby said it reminded her of a distant relative of hers who had been lynched in Georgia. Val Tripp, 64, said it brought back the fear she lived with growing up in Evergreen, Ala.

So it was an ongoing series of crimes committed by thousands of people aided by the complicity and indifference of a large portion of American society & not just a hanful of illiterate, under-educated, ignorant racist malcontents. Lynching had become part of the fabric of American Society.

But federal officials were well aware of lynch violence. Most lynch murderers made no attempt to hide or mask their acts. They took out ads in newspapers and circulated flyers announcing lynchings. They ignored the 1908 ban by the U.S. Postal Service on violent material in the mails and conducted a brisk trade in souvenir postcards and letters with snapshots of lynched victims. NAACP officials meticulously compiled photos of lynchings, collected witness statements from law enforcement and public officials, even the lynchers themselves, and promptly turned the incriminating documents over to federal officials. But they took no action. The NAACP also relentlessly lobbied Congress and the White House to pass an anti-lynching law. The civil rights group was ignored. Every president from Theodore Roosevelt to latter-day civil rights hero John F. Kennedy refused to draft or vigorously support a federal law to end lynching. Nearly every attorney general refused to push for indictments against public officials or law enforcement officers complicit in lynch murders. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover successfully manipulated Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and Kennedy to steer the FBI away from direct investigation of lynchings. The Department of Justice seldom forced Hoover to conduct such investigations. Presidents, attorneys general and federal officials wailed that their hands were tied, because it was the job of the states to prosecute the lynch murderers. But the states refused. Fewer than 1 percent of the murderers were ever tried in state courts. Rather than risk alienating politically powerful Southern state officials and jeopardizing votes and legislative support, the feds rationalized their hands-off policy toward lynching with a narrow and rigid interpretation of the federalist doctrine of separation of state and national power. This was a face-saving political cop-out. In many cases a bevy of Southern sheriffs, mayors and municipal and state officials openly aided and abetted the lynch mobs. The Justice Department had two powerful legal statutes to go after them. The statutes authorized prosecutions of public officials and law enforcement officers who, acting under color of law, committed or conspired with others to commit acts of racial violence. They were based on the 14th Amendment's due process and equal protection clause. These statutes were expanded under Reconstruction-era civil rights laws passed in the 1870s -- specifically to punish racial attacks against blacks. But they were repeatedly challenged by local and occasionally federal officials as poorly worded, unconstitutional violations of states' rights. Even though they remained on the federal books, federal officials rarely used them to prosecute lynch murders. By contrast, the White House and Congress did not bat an eye in passing and enforcing legislation that widened the jurisdiction and broadened the power of the FBI and the Justice Department to prosecute crimes such as bank robbery, kidnapping, illegal weapons violations and carjacking. Congress and the White House made few claims that these laws violated states' rights or infringed on the Constitution.

Anyway since the election of Barack Obama there has been a rise in Hate Crimes or racially motivated incidents against African-Americans in various parts of the United States.

Atlanta - In rural Georgia, a group of high-schoolers gets a visit from the Secret Service after posting "inappropriate" comments about President-elect Barack Obama on the Web. In Raleigh, N.C., four college students admit to spraying race-tinged graffiti in a pedestrian tunnel after the election. On Nov. 6, a cross burns on the lawn of a biracial couple in Apolacon Township, Pa.

The election of America's first black president has triggered more than 200 hate-related incidents, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center – a record in modern presidential elections. Moreover, the white nationalist movement, bemoaning an election that confirmed voters' comfort with a multiracial demography, expects Mr. Obama's election to be a potent recruiting tool – one that watchdog groups warn could give new impetus to a mostly defanged fringe element.

Most election-related threats have so far been little more than juvenile pranks. But the political marginalization of certain Southern whites, economic distress in rural areas, and a White House occupant who symbolizes a multiethnic United States could combine to produce a backlash against what some have heralded as the dawn of a postracial America. In some parts of the South, there's even talk of secession.
"Most of this movement is not violent, but there is a substantive underbelly that is violent and does try to make a bridge to people who feel disenfranchised," says Brian Levin of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino. "The question is: Will this swirl become a tornado or just an ill wind? We're not there yet, but there's dust on the horizon, a swirling of wind, and the atmospherics are getting put together for [conflict]."

But postelection, at least two white nationalist websites – Stormfront and the Council of Conservative Citizens – report their servers have crashed because of heavy traffic. The League of the South, a secessionist group, says Web hits jumped from 50,000 a month to 300,000 since Nov. 4, and its phones are ringing off the hook.

"The vitriol is flailing out shotgun-style," says Mr. Levin. "They recognize Obama as a tipping point, the perfect storm in the narrative of the hate world – the apocalypse that they've been moaning about has come true."

Supremacist propaganda is already on the upswing. In Oklahoma, fringe groups have distributed anti-Obama propaganda through newspapers and taped it to home mail boxes. Ugly incidents such as cross-burnings, assassination betting pools, and Obama effigies are also being reported from Maine to Alabama.

The Ku Klux Klan has been tied to recent news events, as well. Two Tennessee men implicated for plotting to kill 88 black men, including Obama, were tied to the KKK chapter whose leader was convicted in a civil trial in Brandenburg, Ky., last week, for inciting violence. The murder last week in Louisiana of a KKK initiate, allegedly killed after trying to back out of joining, came at the hands of a new group called Sons of Dixie, authorities say.

In an election in which barely 20 percent of native Southern whites in Deep South states voted for Obama, the newly apparent political clout of "outsiders" and people of color has been unnerving to some.

"In states like Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama, there was extraordinary racial polarization in the vote," says Merle Black, a political scientist at Emory University in Atlanta. "Black Americans really do believe that Obama is going to represent their interests and views in ways that they haven't been before, and, in the Deep South, whites feel exactly the opposite."

Trial Day 3 Update: SPLC Wins $2.5 Million Verdict for Teen in Klan Case Sonia Scherr on November 15, 2008

BRANDENBURG, Ky. — In a blow to one of the nation’s largest Klan groups, jurors yesterday awarded more than $2.5 million to a teenager who was assaulted by Klansmen at a county fair in rural Kentucky.
The verdict is expected to shut down the Imperial Klans of America (IKA), which has 16 chapters in eight states. “We intend to collect every dime we can on the judgment and do everything within our power to put the Imperial Klans out of business,” said Southern Poverty Law Center President Richard Cohen at a press conference after the verdict announcement.
The SPLC sued IKA leader Ron Edwards of Dawson Springs, Ky., contending that members of his Klan group attacked a 16-year-old U.S. citizen of Panamanian descent because they thought he was an “illegal spic.” Also named as a defendant was Jarred Hensley of Cincinnati, who served nearly three years in state prison for assaulting the teenager at a county fair in northwest Kentucky.
...The IKA, which formed in the mid ‘90s, is a particularly dangerous group. Its welcomes violent skinheads and declares on its website that “the IKA hates Muds, spics, kikes and niggers.” Each spring at its 15-acre compound in Dawson Springs, Ky., the IKA hosts Nordic Fest, a weekend of music and speeches calling for the murder of Latinos and other minorities. The main defendant in the case, IKA founder and leader Edwards (called the “Imperial Wizard” in Klan parlance), arrived at his deposition in February with the words “Fuck S.P.L.C.” tattooed on his shaved head.
Besides demolishing the IKA, the SPLC hopes the case will shine a spotlight on the growing problem of hate and violence aimed at U.S. Latinos. Bias crimes against Latinos rose 40% between 2003 and 2007, according to the latest FBI statistics. Furthermore, the SPLC counted 888 hate groups last year, an increase of almost 50% since 2000 that’s been driven by anti-immigrant fervor.

Texas Southern University Fires, Racially Motivated

Monday, November 10th, 2008. There was a fire on Texas Southern University campus. However the local news stations did not report this story until November 13th, 2008. It is believed that the fire was set intentionally.

In light of the hate crimes being committed nationally after this recent presidential election it is believed that this incident might be a hate crime as well.

What is also disturbing is how many incidents are not being reported as Hate Crimes because targeted individuals are afraid to report incidences such as these and how many are not reported because local law enforcement don't take these incidents seriously ( or are racist themselves ). Here is an example where the police did not take the incidents seriously .

An incident occured in Louisiana in June of this year but the police were unresponsive claiming that spraying Graffiti ie KKK & using the N word and death threats and such was not necessarily a Hate Crime.

Denham Springs, Louisiana police say they aren't sure if racist grafitti and threats amount to a hate crime.

The freshmen made a racial gesture during a shop class.

They say the students made a noose and hanged it around an oil can. Then, they made a racial comment to a fellow classmate.

NOTE: This same school recently had an incident where a white student brought a hunting rifle to school. The boy was also suspended, but the white folks in his town think that his punishment is too harsh, and that he should be allowed to return to school early.

II. Violence Based on Racism and Xenophobia

Monitors in the United States generally categorize incidents of racist and xenophobic violence by victim’s race, ethnicity, or national origin, although there is often considerable overlap of these categories. Attacks motivated by racism and xenophobia are also often fueled by religious antipathy, gender bias, or other forms of prejudice.

The highest levels of violent hate crime continue to be directed toward members of the African-American community and others of African origin. In the latest report, covering 2006, the FBI found that over a third of the total victims of hate crime violence were targeted because of antiblack bias. A high incidence of racist attacks on black Americans is also reported by municipal and county hate crimes monitors.
In other racist and xenophobic attacks, hate crimes targeting people of Hispanic or Latino origin rose nationwide by one third since 2003.

Racist violence also targeted people of Asian origin. These included attacks on persons of South Asian origin, who were sometimes targeted in the belief they were Muslims and from the Middle East.

A. Hate Crimes Targeting Black Americans

A review of the record of antiblack hate crimes in 2007 and the first half of 2008 reveals a pattern of both serious crimes—including murder, sexual assaults, and beatings—and of everyday violence affecting daily lives of ordinary people, often at the hands of neighbors, coworkers, or fellow students; in their homes, schools, churches, and elsewhere in their own communities.

In many cases, hate crimes against black Americans echoed past policies, practices, and societal norms of racial segregation. Black families faced harassment and violence expressly intended to drive them out of particular neighborhoods; black workers were made unwelcome in predominantly white workplaces, black students faced harassment and violence at schools, and black churches were targeted for racist graffiti and arson.

The FBI’s hate crime report for 2006 recorded 3,332 victims of antiblack bias crimes, in 2,640 incidents. This represented 66.4 percent of the victims of racial bias crimes, and 34.5 percent of the 9,652 victims of hate crimes overall. Of 2,042 total offenses, 65 percent were crimes against persons (in contrast to 56.5 percent of such crimes among hate crime offenses overall). Higher rates were reported only in anti-Hispanic crimes (72.8 percent) and sexual orientation bias crimes (71 percent). The FBI breakdown identified one antiblack bias homicide and three cases of forcible rape. There were 395 cases of aggravated assault, 564 of simple assault, and 1,079 of intimidation. Crimes against property totaled 1,088, including 9 cases of arson and 980 cases of “destruction/damage/ vandalism.”

Houston - A grand jury in South Texas indicted U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney and former attorney General Alberto Gonzales on Tuesday for "organized criminal activity" related to alleged abuse of inmates in private prisons.

The indictment has not been seen by a judge, who could dismiss it.

The grand jury in Willacy County, in the Rio Grande Valley near the U.S.-Mexico border, said Cheney is "profiteering from depriving human beings of their liberty," according to a copy of the indictment obtained by Reuters.

The indictment cites a "money trail" of Cheney's ownership in prison-related enterprises including the Vanguard Group, which owns an interest in private prisons in south Texas.

Former attorney general Gonzales used his position to "stop the investigations as to the wrong doings" into assaults in county prisons, the indictment said.

...The indictment, overseen by county District Attorney Juan Guerra, cites the case of Gregorio De La Rosa, who died on April 26, 2001, inside a private prison in Willacy County.

That unequivocal passage from President-elect Barack Obama's first extended interview since the election, broadcast on "60 Minutes" Sunday night, was a big step toward healing the damage that the Bush administration has done not just to our nation's image but to its soul.

...the Bush administration sought to numb Americans to what has traditionally been seen as a clear moral and legal imperative: the requirement that individuals taken into custody by our government be treated fairly and humanely.

This doesn't mean handling nihilistic, homicidal "evildoers" with kid gloves. It means being as certain as possible that the people we are holding are, indeed, real or would-be terrorists, not unlucky bystanders; and treating these detainees in accordance with international law, as we would expect detained U.S. personnel to be treated.

At Guantanamo, at Abu Ghraib and in a little gulag of secret CIA prisons overseas, the Bush administration failed to live up to these basic responsibilities and thus sullied us all.

We will look back on the Bush years and find it incredible, and disgraceful, that individuals were captured in battle or "purchased" from self-interested tribal warlords, whisked to Guantanamo, classified as "enemy combatants" but not accorded the rights that that status should have accorded them, held for years without charges -- and denied the right to prove that they were victims of mistaken identity and never should have been taken into custody.

A new study by researchers at the University of California at Berkeley, based on interviews with 62 men who were held for an average of three years at Guantanamo before being released without being accused of a crime, found that more than a third said they were turned over to their American captors by warlords for a bounty. Those who reported physical abuse said most of it occurred at the United States' Bagram air base in Afghanistan, where about half the men were initially held before being taken to Guantanamo.

Two-thirds of the former detainees reported suffering psychological problems since their release, and many are now destitute, shunned by their families and villages. None has received any compensation for the ordeal, according to the report, titled "Guantánamo and Its Aftermath."

Years from now, we will be shocked to see those pictures of naked prisoners being humiliated and abused at Abu Ghraib -- and we will be ashamed of a U.S. government that punished low-level troops for their sadism but exonerated the higher-ups who made such sadism possible

...The new Obama administration has a duty to conduct its own investigation and tell us exactly what was done in our name. Realistically, some facts are going to be redacted. Realistically, some officials who may deserve to face criminal charges will not. But to restore our national honor and heal our national soul, we at least need to know.

As usual, we read in the press that no one will prosecute these crimes. They will if we insist.

We need to criminally prosecute the perpetrators. We must prosecute them because low-level soldiers ordered to do their bidding have been prosecuted. Soldiers who served at Bagram and Abu Ghraib have been court-martialed for the heinous acts they were ordered to and urged to perform on detainees. These soldiers, sons and daughters from decent, ordinary American families, are serving life sentences for betraying their oath. It is time that their leaders who ordered them to betray their oath face the music. No one gets a pass just because they are high up.

These leaders not only consider themselves above the law, but above the United States. We need to prosecute them to reaffirm who we are as Americans. We are not vicious torturers. These people have no place in our city on the hill.

WASHINGTON, DC - The Bush administration finalized regulations to govern the commercial development of oil shale on federal lands on Monday, rebuffing concerns that the rules are premature and ignoring the serious environmental concerns about tapping the resource.

Administration officials said investors keen to unlock the nation's vast oil shale resources need "rules of the road" even though the technology is still not commercially viable.

The rules, announced by the U.S. Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management, provide the regulatory framework for commercial oil shale development, including royalty rates and lease sizes.

The regulations are largely aimed at some two million acres of federal land in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming rich in oil shale - an area known as the Green River formation. The BLM estimates the nation's oil shale reserves, much of them in the Green River Formation, could yield some 800 billion barrels of recoverable oil.
That is enough to displace foreign oil imports for more than a century, said Stephen Allred, the Interior Department's assistant secretary for land and minerals management.

But Allred acknowledged commercial technology to economically tap the resource does not exist and could be a decade away from reality.

"It is going to be some time," Allred told reporters on a telephone briefing.
That is one reason the decision to issue the rules has irked environmentalists and some Democratic lawmakers, who also worry about the massive outlays of water and energy needed to convert compounds in sedimentary rocks into synthetic crude oil.
Oil shale has been labeled the "dirtiest fuel on the planet" by the Natural Resources Defense Council, which estimates that production will emit four times more greenhouse gases than conventional gasoline production.

"Cooking rocks and scorching the Earth is not a solution to our energy crisis," said Amy Mall, a senior policy analyst for NRDC.

Across the country, anti-coal activists, many of them students in their 20s, are attending hearings and engaging in demonstrations and acts of civil disobedience reminiscent of the protests their parents might have seen in the 1970s against nuclear plants.

It's a big change from the 1990s when utilities went on a coal-plant construction binge with little or no controversy. But today, projects such as Santee Cooper's plan to build its Pee Dee coal plant face a new generation activists, along with the usual cadre of established environmental groups

...In April, activists locked themselves to bulldozers outside a Duke Power plant under construction in western North Carolina and spread a banner that said "Global Warming Crime Scene." Police used stun guns to control some of the demonstrators and arrested eight people. This fall, Al Gore said, "We've reached the stage where it's time for civil disobedience to prevent construction of new coal-fired power plants that do not have sequestration."

This wet, rugged environment also provides rich habitat for wildlife like elk, deer, black bear and Pacific fishers, as well as endangered species such as spotted owls and marbled murrelets.
These forests gain more importance each day as buffers against the impacts of global warming. That's just one of the many reasons why logging activities should focus on smaller trees-and always with restoration and fire protection in mind.

As sometimes or often happens events of the moment intrude. So for those interested I will get back to discussing in later posts the issue of " racism in American society. Racism did not suddenly end with President Johnson's Civil Rights Bills and nor did racism cease to exist one Barack Obama was elected as President. Anyway , one of the important or hot button issues in America has been that of immigration and illegalimmigration It is estimated that there over twelve million illegal-immigrants in America most of them are from Latin America. Americans are divided on how to deal with the illegal-immigrants. Some think the US government should just round them all up and deport them . This is much harder than it sounds. Others want to develop a more humanitarian and compassionate way to deal with illegals such as guest worker permits and some sort of path to full citizenship.

For some Americans Part of the solution is to put more guards on the border and build a wall between Mexico and America to stop more illegals getting in. It reminds one of the Berlin Wall which kept East Berliners from escaping to the West. Are Americans willing to go as far as the Soviets did in gunning down those who try to breach the wall. Are Americans willing to gun down men women and children fleeing from Mexico. Should Mexican authorities gun down those who try to cross over into America or arrest any who try to sneak back into Mexico. What if Mexico in retaliation shut down its border to prevent Americans from attempting to go into Mexico.

Unfortunately the issue of illegal-aliens has become fertile soil for American anti-immigration organizations which are fueled by racism & White Supremacists & nativists. Once racism or ntivism is added to the mix the issue becomes a real battleground so that on American TV and other media what we get are people on different sides of the issues shouting at one another.

In this clip Hannity wants to argue that Barack Obama is playing the race card by suggesting that if he loses it is because a large segment of the White American population were racist who couldn't bring themselves to vote for a black man. But Obama's point was that conservatives would use any means necessary including " Fear Mongering" and suggesting that a black man could not be trusted or that Obama was a " secret Muslim " or a " Domestic Terrorists " or whatever his oponents might dig up - As the campaign went on in retrospect this is exactly what the Republicans did running a rather distasteful angry somewhat racist campaign and it backfired or had no tangible effect depending on how the issue is looked at. Many of the conservatives and Republicans are still trying to figure out what went wrong and whom to blame.In this instance before the outcome O'Reilly is suggesting ,in case Obama wins, that many Americans just to prove they are not racist voted for Obama and that black Americans made sure they voted as a block.

Anyway it seems that Hate Groups have been increasing in the United States exponentially since George Bush came to power in 2000 .Concern over Immigration and illegal immigration after 9/11 have become the newest tool in nativist and white Supremacist groups as a rationale for their racist attacks. The Mass Media has been playing up the subject of illegal aliens as if these illegal aliens are to blame for everything negative in American society.

Many of these Hate groups and Anti-Immigration groups are covertly or overtly racist including White Supremacists including various Aryan Nations ,Neo-Nazis , Skinheads and the Ku Klux Klan . Would they be on the rise because they hate Bush or is it that during his term in office and the increase in influence of the conservative movement and ideas that these groups feel embolden in their recruiting and their activities. It could be argued that the events of 9/11 has led to fear and uncertainty in the American psyche that it is equivalent to a psychotic break which leads to various irrational and emotional responses. This then is fertile ground in which fear mongers and Hate Groups can toil and can expect to even flourish. And the Bush Regime has stoked America's fear and paranoia through its use of a steady diet of Propaganda and Fear Mongering. When the government or its propagandist in the public square are willing to promulgate hatred and fear of all Muslims and all Arabs or to standby as its own military promotes & indulges in racist views and caricatures and stereotypes of all Iraqi & Afghan citizens then it becomes easier for the average American to also accept these caricatures as being a representation of reality. So bashing Muslims & Arabs etc. becomes acceptable in the Media and then by the public in general spreading racism and hatred.

So you have those like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson etc. who believe 9/11 was a sign from God that America has not kept to its original founding principles of Christian values. They therefore blame Gay activists and the Feminist Movement and the Sexual Revolution and sexual promiscuity and easy divorce and easy access to abortion and evils such as tolerance and multiculturalism for America's decline. They also believe America was not using its power to attack and crush any group or nation which did anything which went against America's interest.

So the explanation offered by Falwell and others is a simplification of the issues surrounding the terrorist attack of 9/11. God's displeased with America so God allows a terrorist attack to take place on America.

George W. Bush's response to 9/11 was to call for a " Crusade " and talked as did other conservatives of it being a " Clash of Civilizations" or that America was now besieged from all sides and that countries were either with America or against America fueling a Manichean or dualistic mindset of us against them and good against evil. But 9/11 was the act of one particular fanatical terrorist organization and did not represent an all out war of the Islamic world against Christianity or the West. By framing the attack in the way that he did Bush merely used the attack to justify invading Afghanistan and Iraq while threatening various other countries. Bush might have been better off to ask for the help of other countries to use their intelligence agencies , their contacts etc. to locate Al Qaeda and to have its members arrested- that is, if Bush's intention was primarily to track down Osama Bin Laden and not an excuse to proceed with a Neoconservative agenda to use force to get countries to be more friendly with the United States and to help further America's business interests.

There are those in American society who look for an easy answer to whatever ails America. If someone suggest that illegal-immigration and even legal immigration is a complex issue for which there maybe a complex series of actions which need to be taken this is seen as a mere cop-out . For instance the cost and manpower needed to round up all of the estimated 12 million illegals is seen as an extremely costly task. The American economic meltdown and the mess it has made in its War on Terror there are those who need someone to blame. The white racist including some in the media will blame minority groups including illegal immigrants and visible minorities and the poor for America's woes. For how else can they explain that such an exceptional country as the United States which the far right sees as the chosen nation of God how could it end up in such a mess. They believe that Jews and Black Americans and liberals are out to undermine Christian White American values.They believe that illegal immigration is one of a number of tactics being used by those who really control America to change America in a radical manner to the extent that eventually Whites in America will be in the minority . This irrational conspiracy theory thinking coincides with their other fears which they hold in common with the Radical Religious Right and many conservatives is that of the so-called Gay-Agenda in which Gays in America they believe want to somehow transform the majority of American heterosexuals into Gays & Lesbians through the use of propaganda and the infiltration of Gays into American institutions.


To White Supremacists the granting of civil-rights to African Americans is at the root of what ails America today. They further claim things have gotten worse in America since the emergence of African-Americans into positions of authority and power. To them and it seems to a lot of American conservatives the election of Barack Obama means the end of America as they know it. The White Supremacists of course believes that Obama must be removed from the Presidency by whatever means necessary including assassination. The election of Barack Obama they see as proof that America is going in the wrong direction . America they believe was founded as a white Christian nation but has lost its way and so must be returned to, in their view, its original ideal pure state of being White & Christian. In order to accomplish this they would have all non-whites and non-Christians tossed out of the country .

But given the anger and fear mongering raised throughout the Palin/McCain campaign as they accused Obama of being a " Domestic Terrorists" ; a " Secret Muslim" ; or a " Socialist or "Communist" the Republicans have created an environment where the unthinkable may happen. The attacks on Barack Obama didn't just begin after Palin entered the race but were ongoing on the Part of the Republicans and conservatives and by the Hate Radio Shock Jocks and especially FOX News week after week if not day in and day out they made up BS to try to scare people away from Barack Obama. So if anything horrible happens FOX News and the Republicans and conservatives in their whipping up such doubts and hatred of Barack Obama should be seen as contributing to such an event. When you encourage people in your audience to shout out " Kill Him " etc. you have the responsibility to set your audience straight. McCain and Palin and the Republicans and the conservative movement did little or nothing to stop the use of inflammatory rhetoric or to censure those who spoke out in such a way or those in the campaign who stoked the fires of racism and hatred and took part in fear mongering. It is only as time went on and it became obvious that such tactics were not working and were causing a backlash that conservatives started to bail on McCain and to distance themselves from his campaign.

It seems to me that the more that Americans are willing to openly discuss the issue of race and racism and realize it has been part of American history and culture then it will help Americans to start actually doing things to improve race-relations. The other thing is that the media should be more critical of overtly and covertly racist organizations. As we have seen many of the anti-immigration organizations are in fact racist and immigration is just at the moment an easy target or one that it is easy for many Americans to see as important. One needs to examine these groups defining of the issue and their solutions.


When someone who is supposedly more mainstream like Bill O'Reilly or Rush Limbaugh or John McCain or Ann Coulter or those spokespersons at Fox News begin talking about illegal immigrants using racist language & name calling, or comparing illegals to an "infestation" or overly generalizing " all illegals are "criminal low-lifes" or " lazy" and "welfare cheaters" etc. this is just another form of racism. Because they are Media personalities or are considered political pundits or characterized as conservative intellectuals doesn't mean they should not mean that they can get away with saying whatever they want to say. When Ann Coulter describes all Arabs and Muslims by the racist term "rag heads " and then says America should invade their countries and either kill them or convert them to Christianity this is no different than similar things that are said by members of the American NAZI Party or the Ku Klux Klan. Yet she and other Hate Mongers are the heroes of the conservative movement in America and she is treated by the Media as if she were some sort of non-partisan intellectual or political pundit and scholar yet she is none of these.

Anyway there have been various responses by racist organizations in America to the election of Barack Obama - some speak openly about killing Obama and seem to believe and encourage the idea that a group or some individual may try to kill Obama ( there was a video of a Klan leader expressing this view but it has since been removed from YouTube)others think that the election of Barack Obama will act as a catalyst for increasing recruitment for White Supremacist groups.

In this clip from the Young Turks Pat Buchanan uses the word " Exotic " to describe Obama. Again Buchanan claims many people are supporting Obama just because he is black and that the Republicans have the right to qustion and raise doubts about why so many people support Obama. He also suggest that the Republicans should use race as part of their campaign along with digging up any associations Barack Obama has had as a form of guilt by Association . So Buchanan has no problem with the campaign becoming negative and down right nasty as it did. What he didn't count on is that most Americans this time around were not going to fall for this sort of underhanded smear and fear campaign with racist undertones and instead they voted for Barack Obama.

Mainstream Media tolerates and promotes Pat Buchanan's style of racism as being okay. Buchanan thinks black americans should appreciate what has been done for them over the centuries by White America. Buchanan argues that being brought to America on slave ships helped black people for they were then introduced to Christianity and Plantation Slavery.

Buchanan like many Americans seems unable to come to grips with America's real history which is not always as flattering as the Mythical History of America which many Americans prefer over the reality. According to the American Mythos America has always been a bastion of democratic freedom and equality from its conception in 1776. But at that time only white males who were property owners had the right to vote or to have a say in how the nation was to be configured and what its agenda and policies should be.
