Neil Young's " Lets Impeach The President "
Anyway it is great that Obama has become President of the United States. But as he admits this is just the first step that there is a lot of work to do. So his being elected must result in actions and not just sentimental oratory & rhetoric.
I know Obama talks about reconciliation, bi-partisanship and healing the nation these are wonderful sentiments but does this mean that he shouldn't go after the criminal element in the Bush Regime. It would be best that Obama set up a series of investigative committees to bring the lies and propaganda and corruption of the Bush Regime into the light of day and then consider prosecutions where needed. A "Living and let live " attitude is not good enough because it will just embolden those who think they can abuse the laws of the land and the US Constitution for their own political agenda or just for greed and no matter what wrong-doing they commit they will get away with it.
The Republicans and the Ultra-Conservatives are great at paying lip-service to law and order and adhering to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights but during the last eight years they have lied to the public and have pillaged the US Treasury for themselves and their Corporations. Otherwise Bush and Cheney and Karl Rove and the whole corrupt circle of friends will go laughing all the way to the bank knowing that the " liberals " and others who put Obama into power are too soft-hearted and soft-headed to bring all these crooks to justice. Many of them may have changed their tune at least, in public as it appeared that Obama would win but they are still the same old nasty , greedy characters who were indifferent to the will of the American people . They wrapped themselves in the Flag and in slogans such as " Support The Troops" or claimed to be on a " Christian Crusade " but it was all for the purpose of " Fleecing the Nation". It is odd how the " Joe the Plumber " type gets all upset because someone on welfare gets a few dollars more than Joe thinks they should by Joe has no problem with Contractors in Iraq raking in Billions of dollars for shoddy workmanship or work that was never completed or making big profits by overcharging the Government for its goods and services. Maybe " Joe the Plumber " believes as Bush and Cheney and Karl Rove & Co. do that an individual or a corporation has a GOD GIVEN RIGHT to make as much of a profit as they possibly can and if the government or the US Treasury and the American people are willing to let them get away with this sort of Highway Robbery then so be it.
But Obama and his government must just say " NO " to the crimes committed by the Bush Regime . Otherwise they will prove that they are in fact to use the word Conservatives like Ann Coulter use as an insult against " Liberals " that they are indeed " Pussies" . So standing up to the Neoconservatives and Ultra-Conservatives and their greedy friends would show them that Obama is not weak but acts decisively in order to defend " Basic Principles " of Democracy and out of respect for the US Constitution and the " Law of the Land".
The Republicans and Conservatives at the moment like the idea of moving on and putting all the lies and propaganda and corruption behind us as it were. That way they get to keep their reputations and their pilfered wealth in tact so that they can return to fight another day. Because as Obama's supporters celebrate the Conservatives in America are planing their next assault on American Democracy.
and so it goes,

Jon Stewart: FOX News in Mourning
UPDATE: 12:17pm
Neil Young's Subliminal Message - Vote For Obama
So here's a song from Neil Young about America's need for a leader who will unite the American people and he mentions Obama coincidence or Prophecy. This is the first step in returning America to sanity. But there's a long way yet to go.
" Maybe its Obama" Prophetic
Looking For a Leader-Neil Young
from the album Living With War
Song recorded in 2006
Check out Neil Young's website Living With War
For instane here's a bit from an article on the website about John McCain; is he really this daft?:
Now if some Ultra-Conservative or Radical Religious Right individual were to listen to this song they might suggest that Neil Young was actively engaging in some sort of mind-control on behalf og Barack Obama by placing his name in the song as subliminal mind -control.
Anyway here's a funny bit of Jon Stewart and Chris Wallace at FOX News.
Is Pat Robertson sincere or just jumping on the bandwagon recognizing that many evangelicals did not trust McCain or Palin and many voted for Obama to get rid the corrupt & greedy Bush Regime which was far from being Patriotic.
He trashes Palin for not being ready
Rev. Pat Robertson: "Obama is absolutely brilliant and can be one of the great presidents"
But this next clip Pat Robertson praises Palin as being brilliant and ready for the job.
Pat Robertson- Astounded by Palin's abilities
Jerry Falwell & Pat Roberson blame the liberal agenda of the ACLU for 9/11
James Dobson- Focus on the Family
criticizes Obama
Dr. Dobson Terrified Of Obama Being Leader Of The Free World
Hannity & Colmes on Dobson & Obama
Mike Huckabee & his misguided, misinformed attack on Obama.
What Dobson and others confuse is that Obama was talking about the Evangelical Fundamentalist' view of reading the Bible as the innerrant literal word of God . Such a reading of the Bible Obama argued would lead to contradictions , at the least, and to defending outdated extreme practices such as stoning. Obama was not criticizing what he would believe to be mainstream Christian interpretations of the Bible.

MY HOLIDAY WITH JOHN McCAIN
(This shocking account was written by Ana Dubey, who has a PhD in psychology and has a private practice in San Francisco... )
I was shocked when he said, "If I was in charge, I would nuke Iraq to teach them a lesson." Given McCain's personal experience with the horrors of war, I had expected a more balanced point of view. I commented on the tragic consequences of the nuclear attacks on Japan during WWII - but no, he was not to be dissuaded. He went on to say that if it was up to him he would have dropped many more nuclear bombs on Japan. I rapidly extricated myself from this conversation as I could tell that his experience being tortured as a POW didn't seem to have mellowed out his perspective, but rather had made him more aggressive and vengeful towards the world.
My final encounter with McCain was on the morning that he was leaving Turtle Island. Amy and I were happily eating pancakes when McCain arrived and told Amy that she shouldn't be having pancakes because she needed to lose weight. Amy burst into tears at this abusive comment. I felt fiercely protective of Amy and immediately turned to McCain and told him to leave her alone. He became very angry and abusive towards me, and said, "Don't you know who I am." I looked him in the face and said, "Yes, you are the biggest asshole I have ever met" and headed back to my cabin. I am happy to say that later that day when I arrived at lunch I was given a standing ovation by all the guests for having stood up to McCain's bullying.

Stunned By Obama's Victory Shock Jocks & The Neocons Still Attacking Obama
UPDATE: 4:14 Nov. 6
And now a song from John Prine:
Some Humans aint Human ie. Bush
So Elvis Presley according to the McCain Palin Bush supporters must have been a " Socialist" since in this song he seems to indicate that he too believed society had a responsibility to help those born into poverty. But the anti-Abortionist would insist the poor woman have the childs but they won't help feed, clothe or look after the child's health needs etc. So if the child starves to death or dies because of lack of adequate healthcare these mean spirited heartless Pro-Family Pro-values types just don't think about such things. Then they'll claim it's all up to God as their rationalization for their inhumane social policies .

Just because Obama won doesn't mean that those on the right will suddenly stop attacking and smearing him. At the moment they are in shock or in a panic state trying to figure out how they lost the election and next how to regroup and once again fill the airwaves with their " Fear Mongering " and their other tactics that they use. Remember they -the Radical Religious Right and the Ultra-Conservatives & the Neocons- believe either that most Americans already think as they do or that they should and that those who do not should not have been encouraged to vote.
After running a dirty campaign against Obama - a campaign of smears & Fear Mongering calling Obama a Communist, " Potential Terrorists who hates America, as UnAmerican and a " Secret Muslim " Palin claims that it was because of a partisan media that she lost who unfairly attacked her.
Palin Slams Media - Wants To Help Restore Credibility

The Ultra-Conservatives , the Radical Religious Right and the Neoconservatives claim that Barack Obama's victory was not a true reflection of the Will of the American electorate. They have offered up several rationalizations for the Obama victory . Somehow they claim that McCain and Palin lost the election because the American people were tricked into it. Its not that Americans voted for change . Its not that Americans voted to oust the Republicans and Noconservatives from Washington for their ineptness and major blunders such as the war in Iraq. The conservatives in America are spinning their own conspiracy theories about why Obama won and McCain and Palin lost. They persist in claiming that the vote wasn't a refutation of the radical neoconservative agenda of the Bush Regime . The vote wasn't a refutation of laissez faire 19th century style capitalism. The vote wasn't a refutation of Republican and the Religious Rights attacks on tolerance and pluralism. The vote they claim was not a refutation of the insane Bail-out of Wall Street. The vote they claim was not a refutation of the ongoing scandals over the theft and fraud by contractors in Iraq. The vote wasn't a refutation of the tactics such as renditions and torture used by the Bush Regime in its war on Terror. The vote wasn't a refutation of the over-expansion of the powers of the Executive under the Bush Regime. The vote was not a refutation of the over-reach of The Patriot Act or over such things as warranless wire taps or the abuses at Abu Ghraib or Gitmo or over Blackwater and other private contracors going on a killing spree in Iraq. The vote wasn't the result of the damage done by the Bush Regime to America's reputation abroad. The vote wasn't a response to the Bush Regimes sweeping deregulation across the board.
No it wasn't one or all of these things combined that put Obama in power. No they believe that Obama put much of the country under some sort of voodoo spell .Obama used the media and the internet to hypnotize millions of Americans so that they would vote for him. In Radical Religious Right terms Obam is possibly the Anti-Christ or at least a false prophet. How else can they explain losing in such a big way to Obama and the Democrats. Or they suggest Obama is a " Secret Muslim " or the Manchurian Candidate about to unleash a Kamer Rouge dictatorship on America. This is of course is a form of projection by those who saw nothing wrong with the Bush Regime ruling as if the presidency was a dictatorship . As long as the dictator and one party rule was in the hands of the Republicans their supporters saw nothing wrong with it. But what if Obama were to act as if he were running a dictatorship with one party rule which he could do given how powerful the Executive has become after eight years of George Bush's dictatorship . So what the remnants of the ultra-conservatives in the Republican Party fear is that Obama will act in a similarly unilateral way as Bush and the Republicans did when they were in power. So Obama would then push through legislation to further his supposedly radical agenda . Meanwhile any new or past legislation he didn't like he would veto or just ignore it as Bush did. So what they fear is that he will act like they did when they were in power.
Ann Coulter On Fox News Stiill Screeching Against Obama
Karl Rove claims Obama campaign used such dirty tricks as getting more Americans to register to vote and then got them to the polls to vote. Besides that Karl Rove says Obama didn't win by that much and so doesn't have any sort of mandate. Yet when Bush won in 2000 by not that much Bush was hailed as having a mandate to force the Neoconservative agenda on America. Hannity and Rove still believe that Obama has a secret agenda and that the person people voted for is not the real Barack Obama.
Hannity claims Bush has been treated unfairly by the Media from day one in 2000. This is utterly mind-boggling that Bush who lied to the American people to take them into an unnecessary war is the victim in all this. The corruption and ineptness in the Bush regime was all an invention of the media according to Hannity.
Hannity and Rove Still Calling Obama A Radical Socialist
The election's over but Hannity and Rove are still smearing. From the 11/5/08 Hannity & Colmes.
"O'Reilly claims that Obama won because of the support of the Radical Left . He further claims tha Obama is still a mystery to Americans . So Reilly still wants to fuel the flames over Obama as a " Secret Socialist or Communist '. The only reason Obama got so many votes was because Americans were mad about the state of the economy.

Michelle Malkin uses the stereotype of African-Americans as Minnie the Moocher as if the woman depicted expected Obama to pay her bills no matter what. What the woman may have meant something quite different as in that Obama would take measures to improve the lot of the poor or improve the economy . Once again Michelle Malkin reveals her disdain for anyone who is poor who should be just left to starve or freeze to death.. To Malkin only the rich matter and the rest of Americans have to keep their mouths shut and stop whining.
Next we get her take on the Black Panthers whom I guess she believes got the vote out one way or the other for Barack Obama. So it was because of intimidation at the polls by the Black Panther which led to Obama's victory.
Michelle Malkin on Election Day
In case you missed it here is Glenn Beck's over the top and over edge as it were attack on Obama and his supporters. Those Americans who voted for Obama should realize that the Right is attacking them as well as Obama since they were according to the right easily duped by the Obama Campaign and didn't realize what they were voting for. So if you voted for Obama you are not evil like Obama but you are just " down right Stupid ". Or to put it another way Obama was able to Hypnotize American voters because he has these super powers or practices -some sort of Voodoo to make people believe in him and vote for him. Sort of like Governor Palin's Witch Doctor who said a prayer over her to protect her from evil spirits and liberals, I guess.
Obama according to Glenn Beck has mysterious supernatural powers- so be afraid whereas McCain Palin and Bush are honest forthright individuals who would never lie or use propaganda or use "smear tactics "or " Fear Mongering " or " Red Baiting" or use " Racism "or "Guilt By Association" or calling an oponent a "Secret Muslim" or a " Secret Domestic Terrorist " "UnAmerican" to win an election.

Vote Condemns Past Failure to Act
By Avis Thomas-Lester
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, June 14, 2005; Page A12
The U.S. Senate last night approved a resolution apologizing for its failure to enact federal anti-lynching legislation decades ago, marking the first time the body has apologized for the nation's treatment of African Americans.
One-hundred and five years after the first anti-lynching bill was proposed by a black congressman, senators approved by a voice vote Resolution 39, which called for the lawmakers to apologize to lynching victims, survivors and their descendants, several of whom watched from the gallery
"There may be no other injustice in American history for which the Senate so uniquely bears responsibility," Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) said before the vote.
Sen. George Allen (R-Va.), who with Landrieu led the resolution effort, said the vote finally put the Senate "on the record condemning the brutal atrocity that plagued our great nation."
The moment lacked the drama of the fiery Senate filibusters that blocked the legislation three times in the past century. There were few senators on the floor last night and no roll call, no accounting for each vote. But 80 of the Senate's 100 members signed on as co-sponsors, signaling their support.
Missing from that list were senators from the state that reported the most lynching incidents: Mississippi Republicans Trent Lott and Thad Cochran.

Anyway Barack Obama against all odds is now the President-Elect of The United States of America. For the moment those angry mobs at the McCain/Palin rallies now seem to represent but a small part of America .
Listening to his speech brought to mind Sam Cooke's sad but hope filled song and so here it is:
Sam Cooke-A Change Is Going To Come
The whole world was watching and held its breath hoping yet filled also with fear and anxiety . Whatever secret or not so secret ploting went on in the backrooms to defeat change and maintain the statu-quo have come to naught. McCain and Palin's campaign of smears and fear was soundly rejected . Is the American Nightmare over. Finally has America's long dark night of the soul now ended.

Election Unleashes a Flood of Hope Around the World
by Alan Cowell
PARIS - From the front lines of Iraq to more genteel spots like Harry's Bar in Paris, the election of Barack Obama unlocked a floodgate of hope that a new American leader will redeem promises of change, rewrite the political script and, perhaps as important as anything else, provide a kind of leadership that will erase the bitterness of the Bush years.
Whether it was because of Mr. Obama's youth, his race, his message or his manner, some European leaders abandoned diplomatic niceties to compete for extravagance in their praise, while others outside the United States - fascinated by an election that had been scrutinized around the globe - reached for their most telling comparisons.
"There is the feeling that for the first time since Kennedy, America has a different kind of leader," said Alejandro Saks, an Argentine script writer in Buenos Aires. Or, as Ersin Kalaycioglu, a professor of political science in Istanbul, put it, "The U.S. needs a facelift and he's the one who can give it."

This election will transform American life in ways we cannot yet fully imagine. It's amazing to be alive at such a promising period in history.
We are inheritors of this momentous victory, but it was not ours. The laurels properly belong to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and all of the other martyrs who died for civil rights. And to millions more before them who struggled across centuries and fell short of winning their freedom. And to those rare politicians like Lyndon B. Johnson, who stood up bravely in a decisive time, knowing how much it would cost his political party for years to come. We owe all of them for this moment.
Whatever happens next, Barack Obama has already changed this nation profoundly. Like King before him, the man is a great and brave teacher. Obama developed out of his life experiences a different understanding of the country, and he had the courage to run for president by offering this vision.
When I heard Obama's victory speech it sounded like that of the character "V" of "V For Vendetta". Is that being too pedestrian.

Barack Obama is the next President of the United States. Here's his historic speech.
...It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.
So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other. Let us remember that if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers in this country, we rise or fall as one nation; as one people.
Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Let us remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House a party founded on the values of self-reliance, individual liberty, and national unity. Those are values we all share, and while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress. As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, "We are not enemies, but friends, though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection." And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too.
So as Robert Sheer says now is the time for Americans to gush and to analyse it all later:
Morning Again in America
By Robert Scheer Nov. 4
It’s time to gush! Later for the analysis of all the hard choices faced by our next president, Barack Obama, but for now, let’s just thrill, unabashedly, to the sound of those words. Heck, both he and we deserve a honeymoon, at least for a few paragraphs of this column.
It is “Morning Again in America,” to reclaim and revise the slogan from the 1984 campaign of President Ronald Reagan, only this time the promise of an American renewal is in the hands of a moderate post-Cold War leader who embraces, rather than denies, the diversity and complexity of the modern world. It is difficult to imagine Obama ever asserting the arrogant jingoism that has come to mark Republican stewardship of this nation in the eyes of the world.
How refreshing for Americans to have elected a leader who was among the first to reject the imperial hubris that led this nation to invade Iraq over the objection of most of our allies. A leader who had the courage in the midst of a hotly contested primary election campaign to refuse to play the inveterate hawk in order to qualify as commander in chief, and instead had the audacity to advocate efforts at dialogue even with those we despise. The dead hand of Joe Lieberman has been lifted from the party that he betrayed. It is hoped it is also the end of the road for the neoconservatives who had rallied around John McCain as their last best hope for establishing a Pax Americana.
All the best,
GORD.

As these videos below show the Religious Right is Pro-Sarah Palin & McCain and anti-Obama. They are using typical scare tactics. They argue that if Obama wins that America will cease to exist as a Christian Nation -so a vote for McCain is a vote for God & Jesus. And what Christian wants to be accused of being anti-God and anti-Jesus . Only those issues which the Religious Right care about are the worthy issues to which American Christians need to make their voting decision upon.
The Radical Religious Right in America is hoping to influence the election in America by telling Christian Americans that this is a life and death election for Christianity and Christian Values.

Hate Crime or Hate Speech laws are designed to protect minorities in particular from speech which encourages criminal acts being committed on these minorities . Reciting verses from the Bible would not be considered Hate Crimes or Hate Speech. One has to wonder about their motives and if part of their motivation is not just anti-liberal Godlessness but also that they are motivated by racist views. They are against all forms of tolerance which they see as merely appeasement to evil. What type of speech is it that they believe will be silenced by a Hate Speech law.Believing for instance that Homosexuality is a sin is different from calling for the internment and deaths of all homosexuals. Do they fear they might have to act responsibly as citizens and calm down some of their rhetoric.
Coral Ridge Ministries argue that Hate Crime laws or Hate Speech laws are designed to destroy Christianity. Tony Perkins suggest that Christianity has been silenced or outlawed here in Canada . This seems odd since we Canadians have just re-elected an Evangelical Christian as Prime Minister. Don't blame me I didn't vote for Stephen Harper.

Americans " Punked " By Sarah Palin : Characterized as A Joke to Harmless to Extremely Dangerous or Just an Embarrassment For America
Another Update: 3:20 pm .
One of the things that has become even more apparent in America during this election campaign is how deeply embedded racism is among a significant proportion of Americans who even now feel threatened by the very idea of having a black president. Most of them will not say this out loud in public but will instead use coded language i.e. Obama is a " socialist" , a " secret Muslim" or "he pals around with Domestic Terrorists" he is " an appeaser " or he's really an " Arab " as if Arab Americans or Muslim Americans were not " real Americans ". The only " Real Americans " according to angry mob are " White Christian Americans ". We can only hope that this minority of racist Americans will not carry the day and if Obama wins that they will learn to accept him as their president. It is odd that these are the " Folks " who always say that one should respect the President no matter what that is no matter who he is. It is these " Folk " who get all upset when someone dares criticize George Bush because after all they claim he is due our respect because he is the President.
Just a reminder of how McCain Flip-Flops and lies
One should remember that the term " socialist" or "Communist " or "anarchist" were often used as a way to dismiss anyone who dared to speak out in favor of the Civil Rights of Black Americans. African Americans who tried to get other African Americans to register to vote and to insist that their rights be protected were often called Communists, or socialists as a way to discredit the Civil Rights movement. And those whites who took part in the Civil Rights movement in America were also labeled as being Communists or anarchist and as being UnAmerican.
So when McCain and Palin call Barack Obama a " socialist" they are reverting to using the same "smear "and "fear tactics" used by the White Supremacists in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s . Since Obama beleives in equal rights and equal opportunity and that he encourages African Americans to register to vote and to exercise their right to vote McCain and Palin use the Red Scare tactic to spread fear among their white supporters. Their arguments break down into being basically racist- Obama can't be trusted what because he's black, he is two faced in the sense that blacks in order to survive in the Jim Crow South had to act one way in front of whites and acted a different way among their own people - He can't be trusted because being black he is ruled by his emotions which he as a black man can't control . Or another fear some white voters have is that if a black person were to become president he might decide to take revenge for all those black Americans who were denied their rights over the last two centuries of American history. Or they fear that the courts for instance would treat white and black defendants as if they were equal before the law. This would mean that a white person accused of killing a black person couldn't depend on a judge or jury to sympathize with him and be lenient in their judgement because he is white and the victim was black. It would further mean that a black defendant would be judged in a court of law based on the evidence and not on the color of his skin. It would mean that the courts couldn't arbitrarily give out harsher sentences to black defendants who are found guilty than they would to a white defendant as is the case in the United States currently.
McCain Palin Racist Campaign
And let us not forget that John McCain and Sarah Palin have run a dirty Fear Mongering Smear campaign & that they have done all they can to appeal the racism of many of their supporters.
John McCain and Sarah Palin have done little or nothing to dispell the beliefs of their supporters that Obama is a " secret Muslim" an " Arab " in their minds both of these terms "Muslim" or "Arab" are used as slurs as not being truly American in the same way as Japanese Americans were in WWII seen as being not Real Americans. The McCain campaign has called Obama a domestic terrorists or a disloyal American or even Anti-American or as a " redistributor " -

Sarah Palin Punked by Nicholas Sarkozy: Masked Avengers with Subtitles
Anyway to begin here is the major article at the moment circling the globe:
From the UKs Guardian on Monday Nov. 3rdJoke on Palin again as she falls for fake Sarkozy call
bySuzanne Goldenberg in Washington
Maybe Sarah Palin should have caught on when the caller purporting to be Nicolas Sarkozy told her he could see Belgium from the Elysée Palace.
But the Republicans' vice-presidential candidate remained blissfully unaware during the six-minute conversation with a Montreal comedian that she was the victim of a prank - even after the fake Sarkozy said his wife, Carla Bruni, was hot in bed, and slipped in a line in French about how fun it was to kill baby seals.
The caller, Marc-Antoine Audette, was one half of a comedic duo called the Masked Avengers. Audette described his call with Palin as his greatest triumph.
The prank on one of the most heavily protected personalities in US politics was an instant internet sensation in the final hours of the presidential campaign.
It also overshadowed what John McCain had orchestrated as his comedic moment - an appearance on Saturday Night Live with his wife, Cindy. McCain used his turn to try to make light of Obama's dominance of television advertising, saying his campaign only had the money to appear on the shopping channel - where his wife displayed campaign jewellery.
"I'm a true maverick - a Republican without money," he joked. He went on to lay out a number of strategies for trying to overcome Barack Obama's lead including one he called "Sad Grandpa".
"That's where I get on TV and go, 'Come on, Obama's gonna have plenty of chances to be president. It's my turn'," he said. But instead, it was Palin who got the most laughs - albeit inadvertently. The telephone call got off to an auspicious start.
And in Canada's The Globe And Mail's special section on the US Election this was also the feature story have her chances now evaporated :
Quebec duo gets star treatment for Palin prank/The Canadian Press November 2, 2008
MONTREAL — The Quebec comedians responsible for pranking Sarah Palin are getting the star treatment from the international media.
The duo known as “The Masked Avengers” was being courted by U.S. news networks Sunday after their prank call to the Republican vice-presidential nominee took the Internet by storm.
The Avengers — Marc-Antoine Audette and Sebastien Trudel — managed to get Ms. Palin on the phone, conning her into thinking she was speaking with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
“We're flying to New York in a couple of hours to do the CBS morning show — oh, my God,” a breathless Mr. Audette said Sunday.
The two say they're surprised at the impact of the gag, which has garnered global headlines after it surfaced almost instantly on blogs and websites around the world.
“We're doing it for fun — as comedians, that's our job,” Mr. Audette said.
“We had no idea it would have such a big impact in the United States and the rest of the world. It's the same in France and Britain — it's everywhere.”
The Canadian-made prank has provided a fitting exclamation point for a U.S. campaign that has been inextricably linked with — and endlessly satirized by — the American comedy circuit.
Following in Ms. Palin's own footsteps, Republican presidential candidate John McCain poked fun at himself over the weekend during a highly anticipated guest appearance on Saturday Night Live.
Some journalists from around the World love Sarah Palin but that's not a good thing for the McCain Campaign. While some see her as a joke or passing fad like hoola-hoops others see her as a dangerous and inept person to be so close to being President of the United States. Here are a few examples gleaned from the WEB:
Vice-presidential candidate Palin is a gift to journos, The Australian Business/Nov. 3, 2008
REPUBLICAN vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has dramatically polarised voters since exploding on to the political world in September.
Yet journalists unanimously adore her. Not necessarily for her policies, though, but for sheer entertainment value.
US politics hasn't produced such a goldmine of entertaining copy since Bill Clinton, says BBC Sydney correspondent Nick Bryant, who was based in Washington during the Clinton term and is back there this week to help cover the vote ...
"Journalistically, Sarah Palin has been the gift that never stops giving," he says. "She has provided absolutely wonderful copy that has contributed an extraordinary narrative to this extraordinary, break-the-rules election."
Many argue the 2008 US election campaign is the most interesting since the 1968 race, which featured the shock withdrawal of Lyndon B.Johnson, the rise of George Wallace, the rebirth of Richard Nixon and theassassinations of Robert F.Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr against a backdrop of race riots and Vietnam War demonstrations.
"(This campaign) has certainly provided the best copy since then," says Bryant.
"It's had the first viable black candidate, the first viable female candidate and the first viable septuagenarian candidate. An African American president is something I never thought I'd see in my time. It's one of those Berlin Wall moments."
Without doubt, the campaign has captured the attention of Australians like no other in recent history, with even the vice-presidential debate, usually a news non-event, generating so much interest that live blogs run by newspapers and TV networks drew capacity audiences and had to lock out some would-be visitors. "The level of interest both in the public and in the media is really quite extraordinary," says Geoffrey Garrett, chief executive of the US Studies Centre at Sydney University. "And the level of sophistication in the analysis is high."
And on Sarah Palin as Presidential material:
US Election | 02.11.2008 Deutsche Welle, Germany Fear of a Palin Presidency Drives US Expats to Vote for Obama
The economy, taxes and America's image are hot-button issues for US expats in Germany. But even Republicans are now going Democrat for a far more compelling reason: Fear that Sarah Palin could become president.
Picking Palin alienated expat voters
The choice of Palin was meant to balance and galvanize the Republican ticket with a social conservative who could draw on the extreme, evangelical elements of the party as well as female Hillary voters.
But the move wound up alienating many of the US expatriates DW-WORLD.DE spoke to in the old American settlement of Bonn’s scenic Plittersdorf district on the Rhine River, where life revolves around the international school and English-language church.
All those interviewed said it was a key, if not the key reason, to vote for Barack Obama, whether they liked the Illinois senator or not.
The expatriates in the former German capital come from all over the map in the United States and reflect diverse political views. They tend to be better off than their compatriots back home, since many are managers at blue chip US multinational companies. That puts tax policy, trade and America's image abroad high on the list of issues that matter to them.
and from the UK's The Independent poking fun at Sarah Palin & McCain:
US election diaryMonday, 3 November 2008
*Sarah Palin might be able to see Russia from her house, but her grasp of international affairs doesn't extend to spotting the difference between a Canadian comedian and the President of France..
Palin was telephoned on Saturday by a comedy duo known as The Masked Avengers, who in pidgin English managed to convince her that she was speaking to Nicolas Sarkozy. The hoax caller asked if it might be possible to further the cause of Franco-American relations by organising a joint hunting trip.
"Well, I think we could have a lot of fun together while we're getting work done," replied Palin. "We can kill two birds with one stone that way." The comedian then joked that they should avoid asking Dick Cheney, who shot and injured a friend while hunting quail, to join in. "I'll be a careful shot!" came Palin's response.
*John McCain proved he can at least deliver a competent punch-line during a guest appearance on the satirical comedy show Saturday Night Live. In a joint skit with Sarah Palin lookalike Tina Fey, McCain presented a fake segment on the shopping channel QVC, selling pork knives (referencing his oft-repeated election promises to cut out "pork") and a set of 12 commemorative plates to mark his town hall debates with Barack Obama (they're blank, since the debates never happened).
* Oprah Winfrey has added to fears about Florida-style ballot chaos marring election day, after telling viewers of her difficulties voting in Chicago. "When I voted yesterday electronically, the first vote that you vote for on the ballot is the presidential candidate. It was my first time doing electronic, so I didn't mark the X strong enough, or I held down too long. Because then when I went back to check it, it had not recorded my presidential vote." Winfrey complained she had to queue 72 minutes to vote for Barack Obama
and from The Miami Herald on Sunday Nov. 2, 2008:
What's the secret behind Palin's appeal?By ERIKA BOLSTAD McClatchy Newspapers
RALEIGH, N.C. -- There's a moment during each of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's stump speeches when the Republican vice presidential candidate utters the "S" word, the one word that can fire up crowds almost as much as her favorite chant, "drill, baby, drill."
The word is "socialism." And as Palin has made her way across the battleground states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Virginia and North Carolina for Republican John McCain in the final days of the presidential campaign, she has used the word to stir fear that a vote for Democratic Barack Obama is a vote for higher taxes. Or even worse, Palin warns in her stump speeches, a vote for Obama means "spreading your wealth."
"Now is not the time to experiment with that," Palin told voters in Latrobe, Pa., on Friday. "They do that in other countries where people are not free and where work ethic is not rewarded. And when an entrepreneurial spirit is absolutely stifled. And that's exactly what his plan will do to Americans and to the children who we are trying to teach work ethic and the reward for hard work."
It's an argument that resonates with many of the voters at her rallies, especially the working class Republican men whom Palin attracts in droves. Palin makes much of "Joe the Plumber" in her stump speech, a reference to the Ohio man whose assertion at an Obama campaign event that the Democratic candidate's tax plan smacked of socialism, who has become such a part of the McCain-Pain campaign that volunteers pass out oval-shaped "Joe" stickers at rallies.
If Republicans are successful on Tuesday, Palin will have had something to do with landing the votes of those so-called "average Joes" across America.
...Obama's proposal does call for higher taxes, but for wealthier taxpayers in the top tier of earners. His plan would restore higher, pre-2001 tax rates for individuals earning more than $200,000 and families making over $250,000. Others would get a tax cut or no tax increase at all.
Regardless, Palin presses forward with thinly disguised warnings that average Joes will see higher taxes, even as she pledges that McCain will lower federal income taxes, increase the tax credit for each child and cut capital gains taxes.

Sounding the "Socialist/Communist Alarm" in her attacks on Barack Obama Fox News Reports on Nov.2, 2008 : Hoping For Some More Time, Governor Palin? by Shushannah Walshe
“And there’s hope though, on Tuesday there is hope, because John McCain and I, we have just the opposite commitment in all of this.” Palin said, “Instead of taking your hard earned money and spreading it around according to some politician’s priorities, we’re gonna spread opportunity so that you and Joe the Plumber can create new wealth.”
And from Australia The Sydney Morning Herald reports that ironicly Palin blames Democrats for scaring the elderly
Seema Mehta in Ocala, Florida
November 3, 2008
SARAH PALIN has barnstormed through central Florida, telling supporters at three rallies that her Republican running mate John McCain is the one man in the presidential race who can fix the nation's economy.
"The choice could not be clearer," the vice presidential nominee told thousands of people gathered at a high school baseball field.
"Only John McCain has the experience and the wisdom to get our economy back on track.
"He has a pro-private sector, pro-growth plan that will put government back on your side.
"You should not think you have to work for government.
"Your government should be working for you."
and from Singapore the writer wonders how Sarah Palin managed to get so far in politics and is relieved that in Singapore she would never have gotten that far but that some more serious & tougher female politician would:
How did Palin get this far?November 02, 2008 Sunday, Zuraidah Ibrahim wonders if Sarah Palin could pass the PAP tea party test.
As Mr McCain’s aides have sheepishly admitted, the vetting stamps weren’t even whipped out for her papers before the Republican candidate decided she was his veep partner. For a while, it looked like an inspired choice that would invigorate the Republican ground. And it did. But only for a while, before the carefully-crafted image of empathetic hockey mom cracked to reveal what many describe as an incurious mind and an ill-disciplined politician with a knack for going off-message.
That’s just her political chops. Let’s not go into such alleged indiscretions as the abuse of petty power, from wreaking revenge on a public servant because of a family squabble to claiming expenses for personal travels.
Already, more voters have concluded that she is not qualified to be a vice-president, dragging down Mr McCain’s chances. The latest New York Times/CBS News poll out over the weekend found 59 per cent of voters believing her to be unqualified to be veep, compared to 50 per cent a week earlier. Voters also said they had much more confidence in Mr Obama to pick qualified people to serve in his administration than they did Mr McCain.
Still, the question has to be asked: what was Mr McCain thinking and how did she get so far?
In Singapore the writer continues:
...Even if she were picked as a candidate, would she rise in stature and to significance in the Singapore system? Probably not. The qualities that the Singapore government values in its ministers are glaringly absent from Mrs Palin.
The PAP system is not perfect and suffers its own weaknesses. But, I am quite relieved actually that its recruitment system would not take a Palin-like candidate very far. I can almost see the late Mr Lim Kim San pursing his lips and casting an acerbic remark about her, the way he did over some other candidates that journalists would mention at our internal meetings when he was our company chairman.
The late Mr Lim was a sharp talent scout for the PAP and one hopes that the same tough, unsentimental scrutiny of candidates is a tradition that continues to this day.
So, Mrs Palin? A backbencher, perhaps. Hip hop dancing at Chingay Parades, why not.
But it’s good to know that the decisions that matter would be made not by the likes of her, but more by politicians in the Hillary Clinton mode: smart and tough and who will earn people’s respect sooner than she is relatable or liked.
Or a humorous article on Nov. 3rd One degree of separation and a lifetime of differences by Australian journalist Sean Parnell who happens to have the same name as the Lieutenant Governor of Alaska. Writing for The Australian for instance he claims he can't remember the campaign as such and humorously adds :
(Although I can't remember making these ads, I can only presume I'd had a few Alaskan pale ales at the time, which would also make me accept that Palin is incredibly smart, worldly and a former beauty queen.)

Bush Administration Still Flexing its Muscles Pushing For More Deregulation and Pillaging the US Treasury by Way of the So Called Bailout
UPDATE:
Anyway for our American neighbors don't take anything for granted Get Up and Get Out the Vote for Obama . Don't let the Republicans Steal this election because some people didn't bother to vote because they thought Barack Obama was assured a win on Tuesday. Remember It's Not Over Til It's Over.
Here's another truthful but nasty bit about McCain's Smear Campaign & Republicans Using Racism & Fear Mongering .to try to win since their policies are either non-existent or are just more of the same. These Republicans are even at this late date still focusing on the fact that Obama is Black and the only reason Black People and I guess liberals are voting for him is because he is black and not because McCain ran a lousy campaign and that Obama ran a stellar campaign.
The election in the United States takes place this coming Tuesday but Bush is still in charge until January and he intends to use this time period to pass legislation based upon ultra conservative ideology of deregulation. Meanwhile his administration is expanding on the the Bush Doctrine to extend the war on terror beyond Iraq and Afghanistan to encompass other countries including Syria, Pakistan and Iran etc.

The Bailout: Bush's Final Pillage
by Naomi Klein
...What, then, is the real purpose of the bailout? I fear it is something much more ambitious than a one-off gift to big business--that this bailout has been designed to keep pillaging the Treasury for years to come. Remember, the main concern among big market players, particularly banks, is not the lack of credit but their battered share prices. Investors have lost confidence in the banks' honesty, and with good reason. This is where Treasury's equity pays off big time.
...By purchasing stakes in these institutions, Treasury is sending a signal to the market that they are a safe bet. Why safe? Because the government won't be able to afford to let them fail. If these companies get themselves into trouble, investors can assume that the government will keep finding more cash, since allowing them to go down would mean losing its initial equity investments (just look at AIG). That tethering of the public interest to private companies is the real purpose of the bailout plan: Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is handing all the companies that are admitted to the program--a number potentially in the thousands--an implicit Treasury Department guarantee. To skittish investors looking for safe places to park their money, these equity deals will be even more comforting than a Triple-A rating from Moody's
...Treasury is indeed having trouble dispersing the bailout funds. It has requested about $350 billion of the $700 billion, but most of this hasn't yet made it out the door. Meanwhile, every day it becomes clearer that the bailout was sold on false pretenses. It was never about getting loans flowing. It was always about turning the state into a giant insurance agency for Wall Street--a safety net for the people who need it least, subsidized by the people who need it most.
This grotesque duplicity is an opportunity. Whoever wins the election on November 4 will have enormous moral authority. It can be used to call for a freeze on the dispersal of bailout funds--not after the inauguration, but right away. All deals should be renegotiated immediately, this time with the public getting the guarantees.
It is risky, of course, to interrupt the bailout. The market won't like it. Nothing could be riskier, however, than allowing the Bush gang their parting gift to big business--the gift that will keep on taking.
And John McCain's policies if he is elected would be a continuation of this redistribution of wealth from the bottom upwards. The wealthy would maintain and even increase their wealth on the backs of the average American tax-payer.

Meanwhile the Bush administration is expanding the the Bush doctrine so they will have the right to pre-emptively stike against countries they claim are helping in one way or another terrorist organizations through supplying arms or personnel or financial help of any kind. So if the Red Cross or Red Crescent give food or give medical assisance to these terrorists is the Red Cross or Red Crescent to be deemed as enemies of the United States or its allies or its colonies. So if someone gives money to an organization which they believe to be purely humanitarian in its mission but in fact has personnel who are aiding some " terrorist Organization" is that person to be treated as an enemy of the United States. Are those who try to bring food and medical assistance to the Palestinians in the occupied territories for instance guilty of being enemies of Israel and therefore by extension enemies of the United States. This doctrine is a dangerous slippery-slope which could be applied to ostenably humanitarian organizations or individuals involved in humanitarian aid. But the US has already applied such draconian measures in Iraq when they have refused to allow the Red Cross or Red Cresent into populated areas to take care of wounded civilians as they did in the battle against Fallujah and other populated area in Iraq and they have fired upon ambulances and medics with impunity. This is not surprising because the Bush administration including Condoleeza Rice have argued that International Laws including the Geneva Conventions do not apply to the United States and its " War On Terror " . Bush's Last Push For Deregulation

Bush pushing through a number of regulationsA Last Push To Deregulate Friday 31 October 2008 by: R. Jeffrey Smith, The Washington Post
White House to ease many rules.
The White House is working to enact a wide array of federal regulations, many of which would weaken government rules aimed at protecting consumers and the environment, before President Bush leaves office in January.
The new rules would be among the most controversial deregulatory steps of the Bush era and could be difficult for his successor to undo. Some would ease or lift constraints on private industry, including power plants, mines and farms.
Those and other regulations would help clear obstacles to some commercial ocean-fishing activities, ease controls on emissions of pollutants that contribute to global warming, relax drinking-water standards and lift a key restriction on mountaintop coal mining.
Once such rules take effect, they typically can be undone only through a laborious new regulatory proceeding, including lengthy periods of public comment, drafting and mandated reanalysis.
"They want these rules to continue to have an impact long after they leave office," said Matthew Madia, a regulatory expert at OMB Watch, a nonprofit group critical of what it calls the Bush administration's penchant for deregulating in areas where industry wants more freedom. He called the coming deluge "a last-minute assault on the public . . . happening on multiple fronts."
White House spokesman Tony Fratto said: "This administration has taken extraordinary measures to avoid rushing regulations at the end of the term. And yes, we'd prefer our regulations stand for a very long time -- they're well reasoned and are being considered with the best interests of the nation in mind."
As many as 90 new regulations are in the works, and at least nine of them are considered "economically significant" because they impose costs or promote societal benefits that exceed $100 million annually. They include new rules governing employees who take family- and medical-related leaves, new standards for preventing or containing oil spills, and a simplified process for settling real estate transactions.

McCain Is Robin Hood in Reverse
By Joshua Holland, AlterNet. Posted October 31, 2008.
McCain wants to be the great "re-distributor": He takes money from poor people and sends it upward.
John McCain is a firm believer in a philosophy of governance that's been responsible for the most dramatic redistribution of American income and wealth since the New Deal. For the past 30 years, the conservative movement has focused relentlessly on redistributing income, but always upward, toward the top. It's a great irony of the 2008 campaign: Nobody is more dedicated to redistributing wealth than adherents of the ideology that McCain represents.
The numbers don't lie. In 1972, the top 1 percent of Americans took in 8.7 percent of all earned income, but that figure skyrocketed to more than 20 percent in 2006. Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported the results of all this conservative redistribution: "The richest 1 percent of Americans in 2006 garnered the highest share of the nation's adjusted gross income for two decades, and possibly the highest since 1929."
Meanwhile, wages have stagnated for most of us. Economists Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez sliced and diced the American economy, going back to the beginning of the last century, and they found that between 1973 and 2005, despite several periods of healthy growth, the average income of all but the top 10 percent of the economic ladder -- 9 out of 10 American families -- actually fell by 3 percent.
------------
Meanwhile the Bush administration is expanding the the Bush doctrine so they will have the right to pre-emptively stike against countries they claim are helping in one way or another terrorist organizations through supplying arms or personnel or financial help of any kind. So if the Red Cross or Red Crescent give food or give medical assisance to these terrorists is the Red Cross or Red Crescent to be deemed as enemies of the United States or its allies or its colonies. US Election Officials & Citizens' Right To Vote Typical Bush Ineptness or Attempt to Steal The Election For McCain & Fabricated " Terrorist Plots"
UPDATED: 1:44 pm. Nov. 1, 2008
Anyway here's The Young Turks to begin with on Sarah Palin and her 1st amendment rights:
The Young Turks:Sarah Palin Doesn't Understand First Amendment
Election Officials across the United States don't care or not interested in hearing about US citizens encountering problems casting their ballots. The offical in this video seems to think such citizens are just complainers and whiners. Voters she seems to suggest should I guess start lining up the night before polling stations are to open. She says all these people are willing to line up for the newest IPod or Harry Potter book than why do they complain about waiting in line to vote. She dismisses any complaints that if there are long line ups at the polls many working people may not get a chance to vote. It seems that Election officials are rather cavalier in their attitudes towards the " The Right To Vote" by comparing people waiting in line for the newest IPOD or after Christmas sale or what have you. One wonders is whether America no longer cares about voters Rights. Is it because for the past couple of elections the casting of ballots was merely an empty gesture or sop to the voting population since Bush was to be elected as president no matter what. So there is still the chance that Obama will lose because of Indifferent Bureaucrats. So if a few million people are not able to cast their votes because officials were not ready for a higher turn out than in previous elections is the election to be declared unfair and the results to be in doubt. It is odd that a country which prides itself on its freedom and democratic principles does not have a system in place to deal with serious problems at the polling stations. Well they flounder about after Hurricane Katrina will we see the same sort of lack of response and ineptness come election day this Tuesday in America.

More news which proves another terrorist plot was a mere fabrication of the Bush Regime that the US Media appears to be ignoring:
as for the terrorists threats another group of so called terrorist threat has been shown have been a fabrication of the Bush Regime. The media in America grabs onto stories of alleged " terrorist Plots " but if the plot turns out to be untrue the Media doesn't bother to cover this aspect of the story. Again and again we see how the Media has been reluctant to deal with the aspects of a story that may be critical of BushRegime's policies and actions. So Americans once again are left uninformed that a number of the " Terrorist Plots " which the Bush administration claimed were real have turned out to be either the result of bad intelligence or were manufactured fabrications of the Bush Regime. When Americans are told every other day of a new imminent attack on their country this feeds into their hysteria and paranoia so it becomes difficult to explain to them that many of these alleged imminent attacks were not real but were born in the fevered minds of the Bush administration either as the result of honest mistakes or as part of the Bush Regime's propaganda war on the American people.

Scandal of Six Held in Guantanamo Even After Bush Plot Claim Is Dropped
No evidence that men living in Bosnia plotted attack on Sarajevo embassy
by Robert Fisk
In the dying days of the Bush administration, yet another presidential claim in the "war on terror" has been proved false by the withdrawal of the main charge against six Algerians held without trial for nearly seven years at Guantanamo prison camp.
George Bush's assertion in his 2002 State of the Union address -- the same speech in which he wrongly claimed that Saddam Hussein had tried to import aluminium tubes from Niger -- was that "our soldiers, working with the Bosnian government, seized terrorists who were plotting to bomb our embassy [in Sarajevo]." Not only has the US government withdrawn that charge against the six Algerians, all of whom had taken citizenship or residence in Bosnia, but lawyers defending the Arabs -- who had already been acquitted of such a plot in a Sarajevo court -- have found that the US threatened to pull its troops out of the Nato peacekeeping force in Bosnia if the men were not handed over. According to testimony presented by the Bosnian Prime Minister, Alija Behman, the deputy US ambassador to Bosnia in 2001, Christopher Hoh, told him that if he did not hand the men to the Americans, "then let God protect Bosnia and Herzegovina".
..The administration has withdrawn evidence given by a federal prisoner, Enaam Arnaout, against Boudella -- that he trained at an al-Qa'ida camp in Afghanistan -- when lawyers were about to discover that the US Justice Department had said five years earlier that an FBI interview with the man was "not reliable".
Even stranger is that the six prisoners are claimed by the US to be "enemy combatants" when -- with the dropping of the embassy bomb-plot charge -- there is no evidence they have ever fought US troops or planned to attack US interests anywhere in the world. Part of the case against Bensayah involved the alleged discovery of a piece of paper at his home, bearing a telephone number for an al-Qa'ida operative, Abu Zubayder. "The Bosnian police couldn't get this number to work in Afghanistan or Pakistan," one of the prisoners' lawyers, Stephen Oleskey, says. "Now we believe an announcement that the paper had been discovered was made before it was 'found'."
Mr Oleskey says Clint Williamson, the US war crimes ambassador, met Bosnia's Prime Minister, Nicola Spiric, this week. "There's only one reason he makes these visits," he said. "To negotiate the return of people in Guantanamo." The White House may intend to save itself further embarrassment by ending the torment of six more apparently innocent young men.

Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR): Muslim, Arab, South Asian Men Rounded Up Post-9/11 Based on Racial, Religious Profiling With Knowledge of Ashcroft, Others
Filing Discloses Previously Protected Details from Discovery and Depositions,
Supreme Court to Weigh Special Immunity for High-Level Officials
NEW YORK - October 31 - Muslim, Arab, and South Asian men were targeted solely based on race, country of origin, and religion in post-9/11 immigration sweeps with the knowledge of former Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI Director Robert Mueller, according to a brief filed today with the Supreme Court by plaintiffs in Turkmen v. Ashcroft, Center for Constitutional Rights's (CCR) class action challenge. The amicus brief contains information previously under a protective order and not made public until today, including the exact tips that led to the arrest of CCR's clients and evidence of daily briefings that went up the chain of command.
...The brief describes the tips that led to targeting of each of the Turkmen plaintiffs and attaches the original FBI documents, previously barred from disclosure by a protective order:
Ashraf Ibrahim was described as one of "three males, who appeared to be Arabs," who sought to purchase a used truck to carry water and gave "vague" answers to questions about what kind of containers the water would be carried in and whom they would deliver it to.
Baloch was "a male, possibly Arab," with a fake Social Security card.
Sachdeva was said to have been speaking in Arabic (although in fact he is a Hindu from India), and to have talked about "flying and flight simulators."
Saffi, a Pakis¬tani by birth, appears to have been arrested solely because he had been refused admission to Canada.
There was nothing to show a reason for suspicion of Turkmen in the FBI file produced by the United States except a tip concerning three other Turkish men, apparently based on their being Turkish.
The Turkmen plaintiffs argue that Ashcroft and Mueller must be held accountable for this discrimination, as documents uncovered through discovery indicate they were provided detailed daily briefings and information about who was being arrested, and why. The brief also provides quotes from interviews of Ashcroft, Mueller, and their subordinates taken in the course of the Office of the Inspector General's investigation of the 9/11 detentions.
"If the government applied the rule Ashcroft now wants to itself, major investigations would never get off the ground," said co-counsel Michael Winger of the law firm of Covington & Burling LLP. "How are Mafia bosses caught? By starting at street level and working up the chain of command."
CCR's class action, Turkmen v. Ashcroft, was filed in September 2002 to challenge the arbitrary detention and mistreatment of immigration detainees by prison guards and high level Bush administration officials in the wake of 9/11. With no evidence of any connection to terrorism, hundreds of Muslim, Arab, and South Asian men were rounded up on the basis of racial and religious profiling and subject to unlawful detention and abuse at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, NY.
All of the men were eventually deported, though several of the plaintiffs returned to New York under strict conditions to participate in depositions for their case against the government in early 2006.
The suit names as defendants then-Attorney General John Ashcroft, FBI Director Robert Mueller, former INS Commissioner James Ziglar, and officials at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where the plaintiffs were held. The plaintiffs include Muslim men from Pakistan and Egypt who were detained at the MDC, along with others held at Passaic County Jail in New Jersey. Despite the fact that the government never charged any of the plaintiffs with a terrorism-related offense, the INS kept them in detention for between four to nine months, long past the resolution of their immigration cases.
The suit further charges that some of these detainees were improperly assigned to the Administrative Maximum Special Housing Unit (ADMAX SHU); kept in solitary confinement with the lights on 24 hours a day; placed under a communications blackout so that they could not seek the assistance of their attorneys, families, and friends; subjected to physical and verbal abuse; forced to endure inhumane conditions of confinement; and obstructed in their efforts to practice their religion. Some of the abuse includes severe beatings and sleep deprivation. The allegations of inhumane and degrading treatment have been substantiated by two reports of the Justice Department's Office of the Inspector General, and several defendants in the case have recently been convicted on federal charges of beatings and cover-ups of other prisoners around the same time period.
and so it goes,
GORD.
