BUSH /CHENEY JUNTA & PAKISTAN'S MUSHARRAF'S MILITARY DICTATORSHIP : FRIENDS TO THE END !!!

Protest in Pakistan against American & British backed Dictator Musharraf

It's funny how Bush does not see the irony in what he says about Musharraf who is the head of government & the Military as Bush & Cheney now control the Judiciary, the executive branch & the military while ignoring the wishes of the majority of the American electorate as he abandons the Constitution , the Bill of Rights & any International agreements including the Geneva Conventions because Bush is the decider & above American & International Law-

Brutal Attacks on Protesting Lawyers( all Lawyers are TERRORIST in need of a lesson & maybe a little " waterboarding " or hanging them up by their arms for a few days or a little sodomy to teach them about "True Democracy " that is American or the Former East German Style or Burmese Style of Democracy )

One should remember though that Bush/ Cheney/ Rice & the Neocons & the Religious Right in America hate groups like the ACLU or Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch or even the Red Cross if it criticizes American Forces or the Brutal Regimes supported by the United States - just a lot of empty Public Relations & Talking Points with no real substance - Besides wasn't there some problems about Bush's first election as President & that he refused to allow an independent impartial group to investigated charges of wrong-doing & discrepancies in the election process - one dictator or Tyrant is as bad as another - but I guess not if they are Christian & Capitalists who work dilligently to protect the Elites in America or Britain or Canada & so it goes...

and from theRealnewsnetwork we get this report:

In the same week an attempt was made & may be again to have Cheney Impeached but since the elected officials believe that their loyalties are not to the American people or to the integrity of the American System of government but rather to various lobbyists with lots of money to shell out & that these officials major concern is being re-elected & to pursuing lucrative careers after they leave office with companies like Haliburton, EXXON , Chevron or WALMART where Hilary used to work-
ah well so much for democracy in America -
Bush & Cheney are if anything jealous of Musharraf who can use all the force he wants now if they could find a way to justify using such force- I'm sure they come up with a solution to this problem so they can shut down all dissent in the Media & on the Internet & the Blogosphere - they have already intimidated Youtube, My Space & Face Book -

Student Protest

And here's a slide show as a tribute to those willing to resist opression in Pakistan -
Pakistani students, lawyers, civil right activists protesting against General Musharaf's dictatorship

If students, lawyers & civil servants protested against the Bush /Cheney Regime in America the Media would just ignore the protests as they did last week or describe the protesters as UN-AMERICAN & as Traitors or as a rabble of malcontents - The American Elite & the Media claim to believe in Democracy but they don't like it when the people protest & take seriously their duties as citizens in a Democracy -
They believe like the Neocons & the Religious Right that it was because of such vocal malcontents & subversives that the United States lost the War in Vietnam
The Elite & the American media call Traitors & Un-American any who dare criticize the Bush/ Cheney Regime-
All who protest against the Bush /Cheney Regime are Traitors & radicals who must be ignored or crushed & that's American Democracy for you -
CNN & FOX NEWS will raise the alarm if those Americans who dislike the Bush/ Cheney Regime raise their voices & protest & insists on accountability for the administration's lies & propaganda & its wide spread corruption & its undermining of America's Judiciary & the American Constitution & its Bill of Rights & the Regime's ineptness & its War Mongering & its occupation of Iraq & the Regime's thousand and one violations of Human Rights at Home & abroad -
In the end according to the American Elite & Media & the Bush/Cheney Regime the American People are the Enemy if they dare to question the current president since Bush has been chosen by God & he in making policies is like the Pope & like all radical Cult leaders INFALLIBLE-
So there is no need for debate & discussion - all citizens must obey or face the consequences -

Imagine in America people rising up against their government as the people in Pakistan & Burma have using peaceful demonstrations- don't worry most Americans prefer to act as sheep & keep their jobs being more concerned with their own personal pleasure than with lofty & silly notions like Justice & Human Rights -

Pakistan Flash Protests

So anyway the media finally notices Pakistan

Bill Moyers - Democracy in Pakistan

and from Newseye, Dawn News
Flash Protests in Pakistan
A report on flash protests in Karachi. The demonstration took place to protest the emergency imposed by gen. Musharraf

Lawyers , judges & students beaten arrested for protesting -how many will be tortured or disappeared
America loves a dictator from the Shah of Iran to Pinochet & a few dozen others
so the Bush Regime refuse to cut off funding of Musharraf Junta
surely after declaring Marshall law & shutting down the media & beating & arresting protesters it can be called a Junta or a dictatorship -
no matter how many times it happens the American government of the day try to act surprised & even concerned -
but Bush thinks Detaining people without due process is justified & the use of torture is justified and the President & Vice President doing whatever they feel like doing & so it goes-
And the Media in the United States last week decided not to cover the anti-Iraq War protests that took place in cities across the country so in what sense is the press & media fulfilling their duty to the public acting as watch dogs to help ensure that the government is acting in the best interest of its citizens - instead they act as propagandists for the Bush Regime as even the Democrats also did by refusing to take seriously Impeaching Cheney - so who is it represents the people of the United States ?

Impeach Cheney Motion Defeated By The Status Quo

So what's gone wrong with democracy in America. Why wouldn't the Democrats vote for Impeachment !
Is the democratic process completely broken from the Senate & Congress to the judiciary to the executive branch -
Just another missed opportunity- are the Democrats too concerned about playing politics as if notions like justice are not as important as being re-elected or is it more nefarious than that are they more interested in having the same authoritarian style of government when they take the presidency or would a real debate on the issues involved shine too much of a light on the Democrats who supported the war & yet should have done their job & sifted through the intel Bush & Cheney helped to fabricate -
But then again if the judiciary is in such a mess why don't lawyers & bureaucrats stage protest like their counterparts are doing in Pakistan unarmed against a military quite capable and willing to kill them all if they believe it is necessary - Too bad US lawyers , civil servants , Bureaucrats don't have that passion for ensuring justice is done too afraid to rock the boat -

So here's a couple of videos on the attempt to impeach Cheney for a moment hope flickered then faded-
Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow discuss Dennis Kucinich's Dick Cheney impeachment motion on Countdown

Dennis Kucinich, the only presidential candidate who voted against the Iraq War resolution, introduced articles of impeachment against Vice President Richard B. Cheney in the House of Representatives on April 24th. House Resolution 333 was drafted as a response to a Vice President who was "a driving force for taking us into war against Iraq under false pretenses and is once again rattling sabers of war against Iran..."

Three articles were crafted by the 10th district Ohio Congressman and Democratic presidential candidate that allege that Cheney: "...purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States...," for attempting to mislead Americans "...about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda...," and "has openly threatened aggression against the Republic of Iran."

Pakistani Police Fighting Lawyers armed With Brief-Cases & Legal Briefs - Oh My !

Anyway in Burma the Junta declared Martial Law in its war against its own citizenry who are the Junta's enemy . While doing so they beat up & shot & arrested & disappeared peacefully protesting Buddhist Monks and now in Pakistan Musharraf & his anti-democratic Regime has declared Martial Law in his war against his own people & while doing so he has beaten & arrested & imprisoned & disappeared Lawyers & others who were protesting peacefully - well just another tyrant like Saddam or the former Shah of Iran or General Pinochet of Chile & of course for the time being supported by the Bush Regime all of course to fight the Evil Ever-Present Terrorists & Communists & Socialists & all those bleeding heart liberals who talk about those out of date notions such as Human Rights , Freedom of the Press, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Association & other "liberal Democratic principles " as espoused by those radicals of the 18th century like the Framers of the American Constitution & the Bill of Rights & fanatics like Tom Paine the author of The Rights of Man now considered a subversive document in the Orwellian world we now live in -(out-dated according to Bush & the Neocons in the New World Order & the New Post 9/11 World of Realpolitik )

Interview of Asma Jahangir

And from Hindustan Times , November 06, 2007
Faiz's daughter Salima Hashmi arrested: Asma Jahangir

Salima Hashmi, an activist, painter and daughter of famous Urdu poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz, has been arrested in Pakistan following the imposition of emergency, fellow activist Asma Jahangir told a TV news channel Sunday.

"I am under house arrest (and) so is my dear friend Salima Hashmi," Jahangir, president of the Pakistan Human Rights Movement, told the Al Jazeera TV channel from Islamabad.

Salima has been in the limelight for her efforts to normalise India-Pakistan ties. She has been visiting India frequently over the years and has a number of well wishers in that country, particularly in New Delhi.

Given the political situation in recent weeks, she had a premonition of her fate.

Speaking to IANS a few days earlier, she had feared her own arrest once the democratic process in Pakistan was snapped.

"Don't worry about me. My father, Faiz Saheb, had faced army rules many times and was imprisoned on several occasions. Now it is my turn," Salima had said.

Her husband Shoaib Hashmi too had been put behind the bars in the 1980s because of his Leftist views.

ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF PAKISTAN

Head of state: Pervez Musharraf
Head of government: Shaukat Aziz
Death penalty: retentionist
International Criminal Court: not ratified

Scores of people suffered arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance. Victims included terror suspects, Baloch and Sindhi nationalists, and journalists. Unlawful killings were carried out with impunity. The blasphemy laws were used to persecute members of religious minorities. "Honour" killings continued to be reported. Tribal and religious councils unlawfully exercised judicial functions and enforced cruel, inhuman and degrading punishments. At least 446 people were sentenced to death. The number of executions reported, 82, including one juvenile, was a steep increase from the previous year.

Arbitrary detention/enforced disappearances

Scores of people suspected of links to terrorist groups, Baloch or Sindhi activists, and journalists were arbitrarily detained and subjected to enforced disappearance. State agents denied knowledge of whereabouts to relatives and when questioned in court during habeas corpus hearings. Those released reported being tortured and ill-treated.

Excessive use of force and unlawful killings

Impunity for unlawful killings of criminal suspects and political opponents of the government contributed to their increase.

Failure to protect minorities

At least 44 registered cases of blasphemy were reported during 2006. Blasphemy cases took years to conclude. The accused were rarely released on bail and were often ill-treated in detention.

Violence against women

"Honour" killings, domestic violence including maiming and harmful traditional practises continued at a high level. Jirgas, councils of elders, which the Sindh High Court had banned in 2004, continued to "sentence" girls and women to cruel punishments.

Legitimizing Torure - The American Way

Olbermann- Torture by Waterboarding
from Information Clearing House & at YouTube
The Inquistion Continues

Part 1

"On Friday's Countdown Keith Olbermann talked to Newsweek's Richard Wolfe and Former Nixon White House Counsel, John Dean, about Senators Feinstein and Schumer's inexcusable caving on President Bush's Attorney General nominee and an ABC News report that claims former acting Assistant Attorney General Daniel Levin was forced out of the DoJ when he declared waterboarding to be torture — after allowing himself to be waterboarded."

Part 2- Olbermann on Torture

So Bush & Co. still believe that " Waterboarding " & other such practices are not torture. If they & their true believers are convinced of it they should voluntarily undergo this benign relatively harmless technique themselves as Daniel Levine did & then tell us whether they think it constitutes torture of course they don't have the physical or moral courage to do so.

But then again If " Waterboarding " was good enough for the Catholic Church & The Inquisition & with the Former Shah of Iran & that paragon of virtue & Christian values General Pinochet of Chile & of course the Nazis & the Japanese in WWII then it is good enough for George W. Bush & I guess " waterboarding " is part of American & Family Values as defined by the Republicans & the Religious Right -

It is difficult to know if Prime Minister Stephen Harper is against torture but it is quite probable like his cousin or Boss George Bush he is in favor of whatever his lawyers tell him can be made legal- so slavery was not immoral in any sense when it was legal, it was not immoral or wrong in any sense for husbands to beat their wives when it was legal to do so - & it all comes down to what is in fashion & what is not -
The upshot is that these neoconservatives don't give a fig about " liberal " notions like " human rights " except when it comes to their rights & their freedom & their rights over their property - oh my especially when it comes to property rights - The also have little time or patience for any talk about " international law " or the United Nations & such except when it is to their benefit & the benefit of Big Business & the Multinationals -

Or as Bush puts it if his legal advisers say it is legal then it is ok as Hitler was justified in doing various things no matter how we might object Hitler usually committed most of his horrible actions after getting laws passed so he could do what he wanted to - unfortunately most people seem to believe as Bush does that if its legal then it is ok- if that's the case then Hitler's passing of the Anti-Semitic Nuremberg Laws then these laws or the actions resulting from these laws could not be questioned since they were by definition legal & therefore ethical & moral-
If that is so then those who object to abortions for instance which are at the moment legal then they can't object to abortions since by definition if they are legal then abortions are moral & ethical & anyone who objects to these laws can by Bush's standard can be characterized as being anti-American & subversives -

Anyway the CIA & others working for the United States government have taken part in torture & are more than likely still using torture techniques of various sorts including " Waterboarding" which is inhumane & extremely harmful to those it is used on but to what purpose - as I have discussed before in practical terms the use of torture results in unreliable information but even if it did result in reliable information it is still wrong - otherwise where do we draw the line concerning whether or not to use torture techniques no matter how primitive or sophisticated in the end the torturer becomes no better than the terrorists we are supposedly fighting - it is as it were the thin edge of the wedge & leads to a slippery slope down the road to an authoritarian police state -

The pro-Bushites including our own PM Stephen Harper claim Saddam was evil in part because he used torture but if America uses torture then aren't those who approve of torture in this regard no better than Saddam-

For instance if the claim is the so-called "Ticking Bomb argument "ala the TV show 24 then why stop at the terrorists if someone is accused of kidnapping a child & we know the child is still alive if we have the kidnapper in custody then why not torture him to get the information we want- or if we are trying to get a confession from a murder suspect or drug dealer or whatever why shouldn't we use torture what's to stop us -
So as the Bush administration takes part in legal hair-splitting arguments about torture & surveillance techniques or invading countries based on a hunch or because God spoke to Bush or Cheney & told them to torture alleged criminals or to invade this or that country - then if a police officer arrests & beats & tortures someone based on a hunch in order to save lives & protect their community why shouldn't they -

But I guess I must be naive to believe that torture is always wrong since it is part of our Western heritage - the Catholic Church used torture quite extensively during its search for Heretics or to terrorize European Jews & Muslims & in their search for the non-existent witches -

So if torture was good enough for Christian Churches to employ who am I to question the long line of " noble " & " infallible " Popes & Bishops & the Protestant Churches who also tortured & burned at the stake Heretics, Pagans, Muslims & Witches and anyone else the Churches didn't like - Besides according to the church those outside the Christian Church are , in fact, anti-Christianity & are working willingly for the Anti-Christ or Satan or have been deceived by Satan who is " the Father of Lies ". So besides the fact that all those non-believers are destined for Hell Christians are required to seek them out & make their lives as much of a living hell as possible or to ensure that they are segregated from the rest of Christian society & that they not be permitted to hold public office or work at various jobs or professions -

The followers of George W. Bush & the Neoconservatives & the Religious Right , I believe want to return our society to those good old days before people became ( in their view) obsessed with such liberal notions like Human Rights , Equality & Fraternity & Freedom of the Press & Freedom of Speech the separation of Church & State when Christianity was the State Religion & those of other faiths would not have the same rights & privileges as those who were Christian.

At one time that is up to just a few decades ago we in the West were taught to be suspicious of the Jews if not to Hate the Jews otherwise we would not be considered " good Christians ". The Jews were not just believers in a different faith from Christianity but that the Jews were of a separate race from the rest of our European ancestors & that the Jews as a race were inferior to all other Europeans & that they had been cursed by God because they had murdered the Nazarene , that is Jesus whom the Christians believed to be the Messiah & therefore they had rejected the Messiah & his message & therefore God.

Now it is not the Jews we are told we must hate but the Muslims since now the Muslims we are told are out to destroy Christianity & Western Culture & Civilization - though before the Berlin Wall fell it was the Communists & Socialists who were the enemy & now besides Muslims the Christian Right & the Neoconservatives are trying to route out all the evil " Secular Humanists" & " Liberals " & " Evolutionists " & anyone who talks in terms of Human Rights, Diplomacy, Peace & International Law or even those who claim that we should be concerned about the health of our planet i.e. the Evil Environmentalists & then there's the evil Feminists & the Evil Gays & Lesbians etc. -

( if you think I exaggerate just read the likes of Ann Coulter's book GODLESS & her blog or that of Michelle Malkin or Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly , & Fox News or any of the members of the Bush or Harper administrations the hatred is sometimes right there at the surface or just below as they use their own form of Newspeak & legaleeze or Bureaucratic jargon & their faith in Realpolitik & their insane form of hyper-nationalism & their belief & certainty that Christianity is the one true religion & like the Christian Churches of an earlier time see enemies everywhere - and so it goes -)

I intend at a later time to deal in more detail with the History of Anti-Semitism in Western Civilization

Take care,
GORD.

Bill O'Reilly & THE INTOLERANT MINORITY ? - Harry Potter & the Gay Agenda

Anyway just some oddities I've come across this week in case you missed them: And so here's a bit about Bill O'Reilly & his Homophobia & " the Gay Conspiracy "

Intolerance as America's Best & Greatest Traditional Value ?

Keith Olbermann - Bill O'Reilly claims J. K. Rolling is an agent provocateur for the Gay Agenda

Here's more of Bill O'Reilly discussing J. K. Rowling & the Gay agenda

J.K. Rowling Gay Propaganda

Olbermann on O'Reilly's Dumbledore, Gay Sex Obsessions: "Do As I Say, Not As I Fantasize" by Logan Murphy October 28, 2007. at Alternet & Crooks & Liars

(According to the lawsuit from his former producer Andrea Mackris, Bill-O tried to talk her and a female friend of hers into performing homosexual acts while he was present.)

Bill O'Reilly is at it again. Just evidence number 43,293 that Billo is hurtling down the path to Crazy Town. Last month, he made racist statements about African Americans and now the Dumbledore "controversy" has his knickers in a twist. On Friday's Countdown Keith Olbermann and Air America Radio's Rachel Maddow could barely contain their laughter as they discussed his latest hissy fit.

The Falafel Guy used the brain in the giant head of his to concoct the theory that author J.K. Rowling is somehow trying give gays parity with heterosexuals and indoctrinate kids into gayness by revealing that the fictional character Dumbledore is gay. The Culture Warrior has been trying his best to get his guests to agree with him, but he's not having much luck -- even former comedian turned Fox whiner Dennis Miller wouldn't sign on to this latest nutbaggery.

Coulter under fire for anti-gay slur-CNN.COM

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Prominent politicians from both parties and a gay-rights group on Saturday condemned right-wing commentator Ann Coulter for her reference Friday to Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards as a "faggot."

"Ann Coulter's use of an anti-gay slur yesterday was un-American and indefensible," Edwards said in a posting on his Web site, www.johnedwards.com.

"In America, we strive for equality and embrace diversity. The kind of hateful language she used has no place in political debate or our society at large.

"I believe it is our moral responsibility to speak out against that kind of bigotry and prejudice every time we encounter it."

Edwards' campaign posted the video on their Web site, and asked readers to help them "raise $100,000 in 'Coulter Cash' this week to keep this campaign charging ahead and fight back against the politics of bigotry."

Coulter made her comment in Washington during an address to the 34th annual meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference, during which she gave her opinions about the Democrats' slate of presidential hopefuls.

"I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards, but it turns out that you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot,' so I'm - so, kind of at an impasse, can't really talk about Edwards, so I think I'll just conclude here and take your questions," said Coulter, whose comment was followed by applause.

CNN has reached out to Coulter's representative, and received no response.

But the New York Times reported that she responded, in an e-mail, "C'mon, it was a joke. I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards. That would be mean."

as for her belief all Americans should be Christian which reveals much of what is the undercurrent of the Republicans, Neocons & the Religious Right as they move towards a theocracy :

Ann Coulter - Jews to be perfected by becoming Christian
" Ann Coulter discusses with Donny Deutsch on his Big Idea show about her views on Christianity and Jews, and what her version of a perfect world would be like. From the Media Matters Website."

from Alternet GOP State Rep Caught Cross-Dressing With Male Hookers Posted by Howie Klein October 31, 2007.

Howie Klein: Just makes you wonder if these kinds of people become Republicans or if being a Republican makes you like this.

...another I'm-Not-Gay-Republican-- yawn-- Washington Rep. Richard Curtis is all caught up in some extortion business with a gay prostitute. KREM, a Spokane TV station, reported that Curtis and the male hooker had "a sexual encounter and were seen together at various spots around the city." Spokane is just up the road apiece from Idaho and Curtis said, "I am not gay. I have not had sex with a guy." A.P. is reporting that Curtis and the hooker met at one of those porno video shops (the Hollywood Erotic Boutique) at 12:45am and then went back to Curtis' hotel room at 3:30am for sex. They don't say who did what to whom but the trick, Cody Castagna, demanded a grand to not blab that Curtis, who is married, is also enjoying the company of young men, and Curtis called the cops.

Before you start feeling too sorry for this chump, keep this in mind: he's a self-righteous right-wing turd who he voted against domestic partnerships for gay and lesbian couples. Last year, he opposed a gay rights bill that banned discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Flush another Republican hypocrite down the toilet. I've lost count.

UPDATE: THE REPUBLICAN IS A DRAG QUEEN!

KXLY reports that GOP Rep. Curtis was not just into picking up young men for sex, he was also into wearing lady's clothing. My God! What is wrong with these Republicans? This guy voted no on employment equality for gay men and women while he was wearing frilly undies! (He insists he's not gay. Maybe the Republicans have their own words for things that are different from normal people's vocabularies. The KXLY Report is completely graphic (anal sex, etc).

TORTURE : PART OF OUR WESTERN HERITAGE( Parody = Reality )

Parody=Reality
at MSNBC
discussing torture as if there were two sides to the issues- there is being fair & balanced - but is there not right & wrong - no its all up for grabs - the sort of relativism which the Religious Right & the Neocons accuse liberals & other secularists of - they seem to be guilty of - torture is wrong sometimes when Saddam does it & right when we do it - lying is wrong sometimes but not others ok to cheat your neighbor sometimes ok to steal sometimes ok to commit adultery sometimes ok to bomb innocent civilians when we do it not when they do it- ok to starve a nation's population into submission when we do it not when they do it - ok for us to kill enemy wounded not ok for the enemy do it - cluster bombs which create lots of collateral damage aka murdering civilians along with the enemy but their home made nasty bombs are evil & wrong-& never admit to doing the wrong thing if your infallible how can you do the wrong thing -

MSNBC - on waterboarding - legal, constitutional, christian

We live in strange days indeed - reality becomes stranger than fiction & so the reality begins to sound like parody in these dark days before the next war coming soon to a country near you as the West begins to plunder the whole world led by the Leaders of America aka The Promised Land of milk & honey while the rest of the world lives off of locusts & dirt as God commands- so here goes-

"It was the best of times..." that is for the well to do & Westerners & for the oil rich areas of Alberta & Texas & all those able to get in on the ground floor for those lavish contracts to help destroy Iraq or re-build it after we destroy it & now those entrepreneurs can't wait for the bombing of Iran to begin all those arms to sell all those boots & food to sell to the military & even more mercenaries to hire for some it is a glorious time & for others it is the worst of times - just remember " There's no such thing as a free lunch or free medicine or free shelter even if we blow up your house ,your apartment building, your town, or your city it is the Will of God as it were -

Anyway here is an interesting & disturbing bit about Waterboarding & other torture techniques which prove to the rest of the world how we in the West are morally superior to all those outside of the West who refuse to accept our superiority & that History & God are on our side - well sort of that's what I've been told & to say otherwise would prove that this writer must be anti-Western & anti-Christian & therefore an enemy of the STATE- Praise be To BIG BROTHER who is never to be doubted - and so it goes -so what's a little Waterboarding especially when you have American Physicians & American Psychologists & other Professionals with various accredited degrees to aid in the Inquisition oh I mean ah...Interrogation besides it is a means to fill our enemies with fear that the fact is there is nothing we will not do to preserve our Empire oh I mean our civilized humane & loving Culture of Freedom , Justice & Fraternity sorry I misspoke there a little so let us bow & grovel at the feet of President Dick Cheney & his Co-President George W. Bush - well once there were three popes at the same time why not two or more Presidents at the same time -
& like the POPES Dick Cheney, George Bush & Condoleeza Rice are " infallible " as decreed by GOD & Saint Leo Strauss .

Waterboarding Is Torture - I Did It Myself, says US Advisor

by Leonard Doyle

In a further embarrassment for Mr Bush yesterday, Malcolm Nance, an advisor on terrorism to the US departments of Homeland Security, Special Operations and Intelligence, publicly denounced the practice. He revealed that waterboarding is used in training at the US Navy’s Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape School in San Diego, and claimed to have witnessed and supervised “hundreds” of waterboarding exercises. Although these last only a few minutes and take place under medical supervision, he concluded that “waterboarding is a torture technique - period”.

The practice involves strapping the person being interrogated on to a board as pints of water are forced into his lungs through a cloth covering his face while the victim’s mouth is forced open. Its effect, according to Mr Nance, is a process of slow-motion suffocation.

Typically, a victim goes into hysterics on the board as water fills his lungs. “How much the victim is to drown,” Mr Nance wrote in an article for the Small Wars Journal, “depends on the desired result and the obstinacy of the subject.

“A team doctor watches the quantity of water that is ingested and for the physiological signs which show when the drowning effect goes from painful psychological experience to horrific, suffocating punishment, to the final death spiral. For the uninitiated, it is horrifying to watch.”

The CIA director Michael Hayden has tried to defuse the controversy. He claims that, since 2002, aggressive interrogation methods in which a prisoner believes he is about to die have been used on only about 30 of the 100 al-Qai’da suspects being held by the US. Meanwhile, a CIA official told The New York Times waterboarding had only been used three times. The Bush administration has suggested that the interrogation of al-Qai’da’s second-in-command, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, was a success thanks to the technique, and used this to justify continued aggressive interrogations of suspects in secret CIA prisons.

While US media reports typically state that waterboarding involves “simulated drowning”, Mr Nance explained that “since the lungs are actually filling with water”, there is nothing simulated about it. “Waterboarding,” he said, “is slow-motion suffocation with enough time to contemplate the inevitability of blackout and expiration. When done right, it is controlled death.”

Mr Nance said US troops were trained to withstand waterboarding, watched by a doctor, a psychologist, an interrogator and a backup team. “When performed with even moderate intensity over an extended time on an unsuspecting prisoner - it is torture, without doubt,” he added. “Most people cannot stand to watch a high-intensity, kinetic interrogation. One has to overcome basic human decency to endure watching or causing the effects. The brutality would force you into a personal moral dilemma between humanity and hatred. It would leave you to question the meaning of what it is to be an American.”
