Rise Of The Militias In The U.S. : "Oath Keepers" & Friends

UPDATE: 11:47 AM & 1:07 & 1:34 PM September 1, 2009

" Oath Keepers, the military and police organization that was formed earlier this year and held its April muster on Lexington Green, may be a particularly worrisome example of the Patriot revival. Members vow to fulfill the oaths to the Constitution that they swore while in the military or law enforcement. "Our oath is to the Constitution, not to the politicians, and we will not obey unconstitutional (and thus illegal) and immoral orders," the group says. Oath Keepers lists 10 orders its members won't obey, including two that reference U.S. concentration camps.

That same pugnacious attitude was on display after conservatives attacked an April report from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that suggested a resurgence of radical right-wing activity was under way. "We will not fear our government; they will fear us," one man, who appeared to be on active duty in the Army, said in an angry video sent to the Oath Keepers blog. In another video at the site, a man who said he was a former Army paratrooper in Afghanistan and Iraq described President Obama as "an enemy of the state," adding, "I would rather die than be a slave to my government." The Oath Keepers site soon began hawking T-shirts with slogans like "I'm a Right Wing Extremist and Damn Proud of It!"

Above quote From: Right-Wing Militias Haven't Always Been Racist -- But That May Be Changing By Larry Keller, Southern Poverty Law Center.August 14, 2009.

Anyway The Conspiracy Theory of The Fema Camps has been around for about a decade & is catching on again thanks to the wacky antics of Alex Jones, Glenn Beck,Michelle Bachman and Fox News etc.

Another militia style group is "Alarm and Muster" which uses Paul Revere as their hero-but now they will sound the Alarm to Muster using the Internet & other modern technology as their website states:

The Alarm & Muster project has always been concerned with the creation of a network of communication of like-minded men and women nationwide that would refuse the infringement of their freedoms. It is our unalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and we will allow no man, no one, to infringe upon these. We are the children of 1775, if not by blood, then by spirit; and we extend our hand of welcome

Mission Statement

"The Committees of Safety is a national organization comprised of Americans from all walks of life. We are non-partisan grassroot organization in all 50 States who engage in educating others on the principles and intent of our Founding Fathers. These principles are rooted in liberty and self- government. They are to be found in our Declaration of Independence, our Constitution and our Bill of Rights.

As our Founders recognized, there are two vital powers that must be retained if we are to remain a free people. One is the “Power of the Purse” the other the “Power of the Sword”. The Federal government has usurped these powers and WE THE PEOPLE through our States must reclaim them"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Radical Right's Paranoia Knows No bounds as they invent or give credence to one Conspiracy Theory after another even believing that Mass Executions of American Citizens could actually take place ordered by the U.S. government or those working with the New World Order (NWO).The NWO is just another far fetched Conspiracy Theory.

Photo below from The Oath Keepers Website:

"...Such a vile order to forcibly intern Americans without charges or trial would be an act of war against the American people, and thus an act of treason, regardless of the pretext used. We will not commit treason, nor will we facilitate or support it."

Calling all the clans together - From The Oath Keepers

These various Radical Right Wing organizations invariably support The War On Terror & continue to support the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan- Though they may not have supported the Bush Regimes gathering more power into the executive than they believe the Constitution would allow. But they tend to see themselves as "Real Americans" & "True Patriots" loyal to the country & to The Constitution & to what they believe the Founding Fathers had envisioned.

Pro-Troop Eventswith link to Protroopstube to in their view counteract the liberal bias of YouTube etc.

VI-Day: Victory in Iraq- From Support the Troops video link

Anyway in the 1990s the militia movement increased in numbers and activities after the shoot out at Ruby Ridge & the botched police action at Waco against the Branch Davidians- Militia members were convinced then that the US was part of a world wide conspiracy known as The New World Order which would bring about a socialist state & deny America its sovereignty. In their paranoia they saw the Oklahoma bombing as a "false flag operation" carried out by the U.S. government.

What makes the current rise of militias and other far right & radical Right & Religious Right organizations a more imminent and likely threat is that their beliefs and their crazy conspiracy theories have gone mainstream with the help of some prominent politicians and media personalities such as Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Lou Dobbs Limbaugh, Michelle Bachmann . By being discussed by these people the conspiracy theories are given some credence. If Bachmann or Beck or Lou Dobbs etc. believes it it must be true. These media and political personalities either believe these things or are out to stir the pot and act as agitators in order to fuel the anger to stop Obama's policies even it leads to violence as the unintended consequence of adding their voices to the hysteria, ignorance , resentment and anger of a large segment of American citizens.

Add to this the anti-Obama campaign by NRA, & the Tea Partys and the Town Hall mobs and an increase in militant & hateful rhetoric combined with calls for Patriotic Real Americans to take America back before it becomes a socialist or Fascist regime or part of the NWO. And to add the other wild card which did not exist previously that is the internet in which individuals & groups are instantly in contact and a lie a rumor a misunderstanding can travel to a large number of people in a few hours or minutes. This is why various conservative organizations & radical groups such as the Oath Keepers are putting a lot of time & resources into the internet communicating through blogs, websites, face book, my space , Twitter , Youtube . and it is like a powder keg all one needs is the match.

It is all the more disturbing when one sees stories about Americans bring ing guns to Town Hall Meetings or threatening to take their guns to Washington when you visit some of the websites which are anti-Obama, anti-Government, anti-health care reform who buy into these rather far out conspiracy theories. When some Senators & Congressmen actually give speeches in Congress or the Senate about these conspiracies and try to pass legislation in relation to these conspiracies it appears to the outside world that large numbers of Americans are in the grip of hysteria and are losing touch with reality. All they need is some sort of catastrophic event or one which is seen as such.

The Oath Keepers and other similar organizations especially those that have gone public reassure us that they will not take up arms against the government.

But in the case of The Oath Keepers their idea of keeping to their oaths combined with their mission statement seems to suggest first refusing to obey orders followed by a defense of other American citizens & of the constitution. They would also be unwilling to give up their arms without a fight.

This is especially alarming given their militant rhetoric and that most of its members have some form of military, police enforcement & weapons training and that they promote the belief that they should be armed & ready-"Alarm & Muster". And as is even more apparent as we follow the links (See Below)to organizations & businesses which support The Oath Keepers include for instance arms dealers & survivalists training groups and companies similar to what Blackwater once was .

So here's a description of their mission as found on their website (& there is a video of Rhodes giving a speech at the bottom of the post in case you are interested) :

Oath Keepers...Guardians of the Republic

Oath Keepers is a non-partisan association of currently serving military, reserves, National Guard, veterans, Peace Officers, and Fire Fighters who will fulfill the Oath we swore, with the support of like minded citizens who take an Oath to stand with us, to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, so help us God. Our Oath is to the Constitution

Oath Keepers is an association of currently serving military, veterans, and peace officers who will fulfill the oath we swore to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, so help us God.

Our oath is to the Constitution, not to the politicians (or the banksters!), and we will not obey unconstitutional (and thus unlawful) and immoral orders, such as orders to disarm the American people or to place them under martial law and deprive them of their ancient right to jury trial.

We Oath Keepers have drawn a line in the sand. We will not just follow orders."
Our motto is “Not on our watch!”

There is at this time a debate within the ranks of the military regarding their oath. Some mistakenly believe they must follow any order the President issues. But you can rest assured that many others in the military do understand that their loyalty is to the Constitution, and understand what that means.

The mission of Oath Keepers is to vastly increase their numbers. We are in a battle for the hearts and minds of our own troops. To win that battle, Oath Keepers will use written and video testimony of active duty military, veterans (especially combat vets), and peace officers to reach, teach, and inspire our brothers in arms in the military and police to fulfill their oaths and stand as guardians of the Republic.

OATH KEEPERS: ORDERS WE WILL NOT OBEY

1. We will NOT obey orders to disarm the American people.

2. We will NOT obey orders to conduct warrantless searches of the American people

3. We will NOT obey orders to detain American citizens as “unlawful enemy combatants” or to subject them to military tribunal.

4. We will NOT obey orders to impose martial law or a “state of emergency” on a state.

5. We will NOT obey orders to invade and subjugate any state that asserts its sovereignty.

6. We will NOT obey any order to blockade American cities, thus turning them into giant concentration camps.

7. We will NOT obey any order to force American citizens into any form of detention camps under any pretext.

8. We will NOT obey orders to assist or support the use of any foreign troops on U.S. soil against the American people to “keep the peace” or to “maintain control."

9. We will NOT obey any orders to confiscate the property of the American people, including food and other essential supplies.

10.We will NOT obey any orders which infringe on the right of the people to free speech, to peaceably assemble, and to petition their government for a redress of grievances.

Anyway the organizers seeing themselves as serious professionals leaving nothing to chance & paying attention to detail the Oath Keepers administration spent some time on designing a patch/insignia/ logo to be worn by members to reflect its attitude & basic beliefs.

Tactical Graphic Design

Oath Keepers is all about traditional honor and values that are repleat in American history. The logo - patch, therefore needed to reflect history as well as visually be in keeping with uniform patches. The project was to build the logo / patch and to add in a shoulder tab similar to the one worn by the US Army Rangers.

And for a more elaborate analysis on these issues check out article from The Southern Poverty Law Center: Right-Wing Militias Haven't Always Been Racist -- But That May Be Changing By Larry Keller, Southern Poverty Law Center.August 14, 2009.

There are growing signs that militias are on the rise again. This time, many of their partisans are angry at Blacks and Latinos.

..The movement was animated by a welter of conspiracy theories, the bulk of them decrying NWO plots that were said to be aimed at imposing socialism on the United States, sending patriotic Americans to prison camps, destroying farmers with secret weather machines, and so on. Most militia enthusiasts also blamed the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing on the government -- it was a "false flag" operation carried out by the Clinton Administration, they contended, and designed to soften up the American public to accept draconian anti-terrorism legislation.

...The current resurgence has several apparent causes. In the largest sense, it is again a response to real societal stresses and strains, from the seemingly inevitable rise of multiculturalism to the faltering economy to another liberal administration, this one headed by a black man. Similar factors have driven the number of race-based hate groups, as distinct from Patriot groups, from 602 in 2000 to 926 in 2008, according to research by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

"This frequently happens when elections favor the political left and the society is seen as moving toward greater social equality or away from traditional societal hierarchies," Chip Berlet, a long-time analyst of the radical right at Political Research Associates, said in a June newsletter. "In this scenario, it is easier for right-wing demagogues to successfully demonize liberals," immigrants and others.

...Going Mainstream

A remarkable aspect of the current antigovernment movement is the extent to which it has gained support from elected officials and mainstream media outlets...

In Texas, Gov. Rick Perry raised the prospect of secession several months after Obama's inauguration -- a notion first brought up there in the '90s by the militia-like Republic of Texas.

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said she feared that the president was planning "reeducation camps for young people," while U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.), evoking memories of the discredited communist-hunter Sen. Joseph McCarthy, warned of 17 "socialists" in Congress.

Fox News host Glenn Beck, who has called Obama a fascist, a Nazi and a Marxist, even re-floated militia conspiracy theories of the 1990s alleging a secret network of government-run concentration camps.

...The recent Department of Homeland Security report also pointed to the role of the Internet in the current movement: "Unlike the earlier period, the advent of the Internet and other information-age technologies since the 1990s has given domestic extremists greater access to information related to bomb-making, weapons training and tactics, as well as targeting of individuals, organizations and facilities, potentially making the consequences of their violence more severe."
